Irish Newspaper Website .....

Post by JustJean » Fri Feb 10, 2006 2:15 pm

Read this in an email today. I've just registered and am off to poke around..............
:D

The newspaper archive is up and running at www.irishnewspaperarchives.com

There are eight titles at present but the earliest is The Freemans Journal 1763 - 1924 but not all issues have been loaded yet but most of the first 70 years of Freemans is there to use. Other titles are The Irish Independent, Leitrim Observer, The Meath Chronicle, Sunday Independent, The Anglo-Celt, The Connaught Telegraph and The Tuam Herald.

The site is free at the moment but will cost later once the site moves from the construction stage. So use it and print from it while it is free and learn how valuable it is especially for the Assizes trials and sentences such as transportation. The navigation bar at the top left loads automatically and is easy to use. You need broadband or cable to make use fast and easy. Dial up can be used to check the site out but is very slow.

Hello everyone

The day that I posted the link I was able to register and access the records and there were no fees or passwords required. Last night I discovered the same obstacle as you even though I had registered. Can't explain it but if I learn more I'll let everyone know. The site will be a subscription or pay per view or some such when complete but for now was supposed to be free......maybe they had such a huge response they had to close it off.....dunno....aggravating though...

Managed to access the site a few minutes ago, registered and viewed a couple of pages. Saved the files for more leisurely reading, just in case the site went down again.

Hello everyone

This email is being circulated today (14 Feb) as pertains to the Newspaper website.....

***With regard to the website it is still a few weeks away from having all the functions up and running. It really has not been launched yet. You will be able to chose your title for search hopefully by the end of the week. The image quality is not what it was either and we are working on that.

If you are in correspondence with any of your colleagues it would be great if you could let them not that the site is still under construction. One reason the site is still free is because we have not finalized some issues yet. In fact we may take the site down as we have generated a lot of hits and we don't want people to think this is the final product.***

Hi Barbara,

Was just browsing, looking for inspiration when I saw your suggestion for the Irish Newspaper site. I used the connection and found it very interesting, well worth a look.
Thanks
