James Townley .....

Post by angel » Mon Apr 03, 2006 5:12 pm

Hello Everyone

I am seeking information on James Townley he married Agnes Shields 10 March 1829 Killinchy. They had a daughter Arabella who was born Belfast about 1845 so ther must be other siblings.

I need his birth and death and mother. His father was also James Townley and they came from Ardmillan. I have no other information on the father or the son other than what I have told you.

Can anyone help please?
Yours Hopefully
Heather

Dear Heather

Me again - shame you've not had a reply. Lesley is putting together some useful Irish websites - have a look:-

There was an organised Census in Ireland in 1821 and thereafter every 10 years. The returns for 1821, 1831, 1841, and 1851 were destroyed in the fire in the Four Courts, Dublin in 1922. More bad news follows – the Census for 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 were pulped during World War 1. That means the earliest available Census are those for 1901 and 1911. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, sometime after the rest of the country.

There were two property valuations carried out in the 1800s – Tithe Applotment Books in the 1820s and 1830s, and then of course Griffiths Valuation which was done between 1848 and 1864. I believe the Tithe books are in Dublin in the National Archives. The ones for Northern Ireland are at PRONI. The index for the Griffiths Valuation is online at www.irishorigins.com

It’s also worth looking at the sources and resources sections on TS for helpful suggestions, and if you’ve got specific questions, don’t hesitate to post them – someone might be able to help you. Most of us, certainly in the west of Scotland have got Irish ancestors somewhere in the line!

It’s well worth updating your post from time to time as new members are joining up regularly and who knows – one of them might recognise your family or the area you are searching in.

Lesley has started a post for helpful websites for Irish research. It’s not very big as yet, but as you find somewhere useful, please add it to her list.

Dear Clarebelle

Am just trying to pluck up the courage to do some of my own Irish research, so have been reading up on it. It is well worth you posting any queries you might have on the Irish section of this site. It's quite small at present, but I think it has the potential to grow to a good resource.

All the best.
