McShane .....
hi, My grt grt grandfather was Henry McShane, born Dalry, Ayrshire, in the 1891 census the lived in Bothwell, Glasgow. I know McShane is an irish name, can anyone tell me where it originates from, and does anyone have McShanes in there tree. Cheers. Jan .

Mac Shane means son of John or Johnson. A name like that would not be confined to one geographic area. However, Mc Lysaght's the Surnames of Ireland has the name the name associated with a few larger clans. In Ulster and Louth it is associated with the O'Neills, in Westmeath with the O' Farrells.
However, I have seen in O' Dempsey clan (my own) a MacShane in the chief's line, so no specific place for the name. Funnily enough my Dempsey line started their lives in Scotland in Dalry also. They arrived from either Newry, Down or Dundalk, Louth not sure which, probably the latter.

My Graham was the mother mentioned on the DC of my oldest Dempsey in Scotland ( who came to Scotland c. 1848) He died in 1876 in Old Monkland.
The Graham was an Isabella Graham and I am assuming that the she lived and died in Ireland.
