Antrim Death Certificate .....

Post by jontodd » Thu Apr 27, 2006 6:15 am

Can anyone do a check for me to see if my g/grandfathers death was registered in Ireland? His name was John Bleakley and he was drowned of the English coast whilst serving on the hospital ship "ROHILLA" in 1914, I was told his death should be registered in his birthplace which is Antrim

thanks in advance
John

Hi John,

You are correct his death would be registered in Ireland, but unfortuneatly a lot of these records are lost. I tried for a death at sea in 1918 but was told they could not find anything. You can contact the N.I. Public Records Office at http://www.proni.gov.uk/ - they can check for you.

I assume that you have his details from the register of Deaths at Sea, it will give you as much as anywhere, including his usual residence at time of death, age and cause of death.
It does not have any family details e.g. parents, wife etc.

McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson, Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly, Wishart - Angus

O'Donnell - Ireland, Alexandria

Hi John,

One part of his entry would have been I for Ireland, My wife's gt gt gandathr lived for over 40 years in Glasgow yet because he was born in County Down that's where he was registered. Fortuneatly for me his brother died the following year, not so good for him, and I was able to get his parents names.
