Irish ascendants - tips for tracing please? .....

Post by sweetpea » Tue May 23, 2006 4:17 pm

Hi

I have a couple of Irish relatives who appear to have emigrated from Ireland to Ayrshire in the early 19th Century. I have the names of parents for both of them but only 'Ireland' as a place of birth? Has anyone any sugestions as how to go about finding them?

Many thanks. :?:

Hi Sweetpea i would reiterate that one as I have many who did that also.
I guess Ayr was a good place to land from Ireland also Wigton too.
I guess if you get lucky then the Census might tell you but one of my GGGGreat-Grannies didn't know if she was born Ireland or Muirkirk Ayr although she always claimed the latter in the Census.
Any tips anyone?

Hi there,
you might get lucky and find a Poor Relief record for them.
The best ones have loads of info.

As Cathy said you could try the poor relief records. There are some for Ayrshire on the Ayrshire Roots site - www.ayrshire-roots.com.
I've a similar situation as my ggg.grandmother is shown on 1841 census as born in Ireland. In every other census up to 1901 she is shown as born in Scotland (it varies from Ayr to Stranraer to Ayrshire to Wigton). As she was a young woman in 1841 and not in her dotage you would think she would have known where she was born. I think she was either born crossing the Irish Sea (Poor mother!) or covered up the fact she was Irish as in some places in Scotland they were not particularly welcome. Anyway I can't find her marriage on the Opr or her husbands birth (born somewhere in Scotland according to census) so I'm stuck - see these Irish relations!!!!!!!

Post a couple of names and surnames and we'll see what we can come up with.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your replies. The ancestors that I am trying to trace in Ireland are

William Caldwell Jamieson born abt 1826 parents were Thomas Jamieson and Isabella Erskine. He moved to Ayrshire before 1852.

Benjamin Faddes (or Feddes) born abt 1799 County Antrim parents were James Faddes and Margaret McCally. He married in Ayrshire in 1827.

I also have an Margaret Burton who turned up in Glasgow about 1840. She was born in Ireland to Henry Burton and Agnes McLerie.

Anything anyone has on any of these would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.
Ayrshire - Gibson Jamieson, Faddes, Auld
Edinburgh - Beattie, Watt, Plenderleith, Moutrie
Moray - Sutherland, Culbard, Gibson
Argyll - Munro, McCallum, McCalman
Shetland - Abernethy, Fraser, Garrioch
Aberdeen - Bruce, Kennedy, Gray

Dear Andy and other helpful people who like challenges,

Don't want to hijack this thread but as we are on the subject of Irish rellies mine are:
Sarah Begley born around 1817 Ireland but changes it later to Scotland, Ayrshire
She married Hamilton Currie about 1834/5 when her first child was born in Ayrshire probably Ayr.
Have found the family on all the census' 1841 (Greenock) 1851(Glasgow)
1861 (Cambusnethan) thereafter London (moved to stay with son, James)
Sarah died in London. Hamilton died before 1851 census. Found them in Greenock and Glasgow trade directories.
What else can I try at the Mitchell or Catholic Archives? or any other ideas? Thanks.

Jamieson and Erskine are both common Antrim names

Benjamin Gault born Ireland c 1763-he's still around in 1841 for the aged 77 Census in Muirkirk with his daughter Elizabeth Gault & what i take to be two Grandsons-William Ronald-1 & James Limerick-7.
Elizabeth is named as William's Mother on his Marriage & Death Certificates but the only James Limerick gives other parents.
Elizabeth/Benjamin were not around for the 1851 Census when William is with his Ronald Grandparents on the farm & young James is working as an Ag Lab in Muirkirk.
I was wondering if Limerick was a clue to their origins.I know they were in Muirkirk from at least 1840 as William was born there.
Benjamin's other daughter Mary Ann does not seem to know her birthplace always plumpling for Muirkirk but there is a ?on her Poor Relief App.so I guess she didn't know.
I can find no Death for Elizabeth & there is a young granddaughter with the Ronalds on the 1851 so I am taking a leap & thinking she may have died in childbirth.
Any clues on the name of Gault?I always thought it was an Ayr name.

Dont know if this will help, but I had the same thing with different branches of my family. The only way I got any leads, was from any children the couple had whilst in scotland. Their birth certs held the info of the parents marriage ie date and area.............always worth a try!
