Trouble with AncestryIreland .....

Post by SarahND » Sat Sep 30, 2006 2:04 pm

Hello all,
I wonder if any of you have had the same trouble I am having with Ancestry Ireland. Specifically the History from Headstones site. On Thursday I bought £4 of credits to look at 2 headstones of interest. They are supposed to be £4 to look at the full inscription for non-members and £2 for members. Being a member, I logged in and checked the first tombstone. All well and good-- my total went down to £2 as expected. When I tried to look at the second one, however, I was denied, being told I didn't have enough credits. The page still said that I was logged in and that I had £2 left... :? I sent them a contact form about it-- no answer yet. This morning when I returned to the site to try again, I am shown as having no credits at all, although I should still have the £2 from two days ago. :?:
So, I sent them another message... just wondering if this is par for the course. I have been spoiled by SP answering right away when there is a problem.

Well, it has been a week now since I sent the first contact form-- and still no reply. Any suggestions for what I should do next? I certainly don't want to pour any more £££ into this site if it just eats them up...

I'm not a member, but was considering it. However, after reading that they've still not answered your query yet, don't think I'll do so.

As you say, SP usually spoils us with their prompt responses.

Far as I know Ancestry Ireland's search sessions only last 48 hours. After 48 hours you lose whatever you had and can't even check on previous searches.

I've been waiting nearly three years for the "Coming Soon" death certs.

To be fair tho', the Ulster Historical Foundation isn't a commercial operation and the revenue generated via publications and the website is ploughed back into costly and time consuming research and transcriptions. However, I wish they would set aside some money for a less restrictive search script, the current one is PANTS!
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy,
On the History from Headstones site it says in the Terms and Conditions:

"There is no time limit within which credits must be used and it is possible to purchase a single inscription. Refunds will be granted at the discretion of management."

I think the 48 hours is the amount of time you can access your results after you have purchased them (so it is a good idea to save them elsewhere!) So I should still have a headstone's-worth of credit (£2) waiting for me.

What puzzles me is that I have had no response to my two messages.

Regards,
Sarah

I think "AT THE DISCRETION OF THE MANAGEMENT" is the operative phrase Sarah.

Agreed! I'd love to be able to search marriages with BOTH parties names. I'd also like to be able to specify at least a father's name in birth searches.

The automatic +/- 5 years they use doesn't help at all when you can only search for an individual with none of these criteria.

Regardless of whether an organisation is not for profit or commercial. The "taking" of any credits after a time period is nothing short of theft. Any organisation whether they plough the funds back into research or not, should be obligated to provide a suitable service for the funds they receive, and not cream off monies from customers.

Dont they realise how quick the word of poor service gets around. As we all know this is a world wide forum, and there are a lot of genealogy tragics on this forum (me included  )

I havent used this site, but after reading this thread I doubt whether I would in the future.

At last I heard back today! Here is what they said:

Thank you for your email. Sorry for the lengthy delay in getting back to you.

I have re-set the system, so that your remaining credits should now appear on your account when you login.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

So... I went to the site and logged in. There are my £2 back again. But, when I try to view the tombstone it says, "Your credit level is is not high enough, if you would like to buy additional credits - Click here - "

Do you think my ancestors are deliberately hiding?? I'll send a message back again...
