since you folks seem to be best -- thanx again for the help eh ! --can anyone figure out this place name in Ireland -- I ran it against a web list of donegal place names and I could not find a match -- thanks, Lynn in the great white north which has NO snow

Hmmmmm........ reasonable hand, quite clearly "Carlihe", - so can only imagine this is a registrar writing down phonetically what he heard........

Closed I can get in terms of what a Donegal accent could have sounded like is Carrontlieve townland.

Whilst the writing is very clear, I wonder if it might not be Carrick misheard because of a thick accent? Just a thought!
