Hi All,
The old impossible "Irish" question.
Looking for possible areas where these couples would meet and marry.
1. James McGinn/Maginn b.c. 1833 and Elizabeth York b.c. 1834. Her father James York/e said to be English born soldier.
2. Owen Goldie (changed from McGoldrick) b.c. 1832 and Elizabeth Kelly.
3. John Houston and Ann Ellis. Son Robert b.c. 1854.
4. Peter McMenemy b.c. 1814 and Catherine Kerrigan/Carrigan b.c. 1814.
Son John said to be born Donegal.

Hi Cathy,
Since you got no replies before I decided to go off on what might turn out to be a real wild goose chase, but here goes...
Couldn't find anything for couples 2, 3 and 4.
Have to ask, are you sure couple 1, James and Elizabeth married in Ireland? (I'm clutching at straws
)
JAMES MCGINN
Spouse: ELIZABETH YORK
Marriage: 27 DEC 1855 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Children:
1. SARAH MCGINN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 12 APR 1857 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. James McGinn - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 10 AUG 1862 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeth York Birth: 18 JAN 1834 , Londonderry, Ireland
Death: 30 JUN 1902 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:
Father: James York or Yorke
Mother: Martha Mclaughin or O' Laughlin
But here's interesting... Is this the same child, taken back to James' home in England for christening?
ELIZABETH MARTHA YORK
Christening: 23 FEB 1834 St Marys, Watford, Hertford, England
Parents:
Father: JAMES YORK
Mother: ANN
(I know, wrong mother's name, but I'm still clutching at straws here
and I have a few Martha Ann's in my lot who swapped between the two as the mood took them, and she does have Martha as a middle name).

Go to the TNA Catalogue search at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp and search on "James Yorke" (no need to have an AND between the terms), and you'll see several possibilities.
But beware!, - as depending on his discharge date the record for James YORK[E] may not yet be on line, never mind there won't ever be any record if his papers haven't survived to the present day.

Cheers Mary,
as usual, I should have checked before posting.
The first couple are mine.
Will have to check out that christening. Was it from IGI?
Just trying to narrow down other names before my trip to Ireland.
Its creeping up on me, and never enough time to get the groundwork done.
Thanks David. Just gone through the family notes.
His daughter Martha's d.cert. states he was Corporal 189th Foot.

Glad to help.
Yes, the christening was from IGI. I just put in Elizabeth York, year 1834 and father James York. Both of the Elizabeths I gave you came up.
It just seemed so coincidental that the first one was born in Ireland, where her father may have been serving, and the second one was christened in England shortly after, and James was supposed to be English.

"189th" is not possible as there was never a regiment of foot numbered higher than the 135th of Foot, who, coincidentally, were 135th (Limerick) Regiment of Foot, but they only existed for a few months in 1796.Cathy wrote:.....snipped.........Thanks David. Just gone through the family notes.

If you can post an image of the relevant death cert in the Gallery then we can have some other pairs of eyes have a look !
