worth paying? .....

Post by crayspond » Tue Jul 10, 2007 10:41 am

Hi can you tell me if it would be worth doing a month subscription with emaraldancestors or another site? Helen kindly found info re my husbands' family - i wondered if it tells you any more info ie where they lived and access to census etc.
Feel as if i am stumbling in the dark!

Hi Ailsa,

I've not taken a month's subs for them, but only because I've never found any of my lot on there yet  .

However, were one to finally turn up on a search I'd probably be tempted to do so, purely on the basis that it might lead to finding a lot more information.

As for stumbling in the dark? You aren't alone when it comes to Irish ancestors. There are a fair few of us creeping about in that great black hole

Finding my GG Grandparents Belfast marriage on AncestryIreland and being sent my GG Grandmother's baptism record from the church she was baptised in was like winning the lottery.

Hi Mary,
At least in Glasgow you know more or less the areas that come up in the census and certs but Belfast/Ireland is different.
All we have of Ian's gran to go on is her birth cert
Sarah Young born 6/3/1906 parents Robert Young and Mary Jane Young formely Bruce address Boyd St Urban no 5 County of Antrim ,Belfast.

On her marriage cert to Ian's grandad in 1924 in Glasgow Her parents listed as Robert Young - labourer - Mary Jane Young formerly Cosgrove? m.s Bruce ( deceased). That is about it.
At times like these you wish you had paid more attention to what they were saying.
His gran (Sarah) was always very bitter and never spoke of her parents. I have a feeling the mother died young and he - unable to care for her (possibly more kids?) put them in some sort of institution.
Anyone out there with any ideas or ability to look anything up - it would be appreciated. Maybe a death cert for Mary Jane -anything .
Thanks
Ailsa

Black hole it may be, but sometimes the old "small world" theory (albeit it 60 years apart  ) can really surprise you.

Guess where my GG Grandmother was living when she got married in 1845? Boyd Street!

I just took a one-month out with them this week. I haven't found anyone I can say is definitely mine, but still, it was worth trying. Sometimes you just have to commit to trying, you know? I'll probably nose around there a bit more, and return once a year or so - sooner or later one of my lot is BOUND to come up on the radar! (The one that MIGHT have been mine doesn't have the right mother's name, and I couldn't see that without subscribing.)

emandy,
A small world indeed! truth in the saying we are all related to each other! I think Boyd St was pulled down (maybe someone knows when). Good luck with your search.
Archivecookie,
You are right of course, once i have collected more info i will do it.
Re your name not being right - maybe he had been married before or again - depending on the year. It's gymnastics for the brain!

The really biggest problem I have with the Irish records is this thing about the mother not being named.

Neither on my GG Grandmother's baptism nor on her marriage to my GG Grandfather gives either her or my GG Grandfather's mother's names.

Very inconsiderate, these ancient folk
