Hi Maggie,
Would your Fostin be this one in the 1930 census? If so, he says he was born in Northern Ireland (but I know better than to trust implicitly what anyone says on a census form...)
Sarah
Eid Fostin, 38, age at first marriage 31, born in Northern Ireland (parents also), year of immigration 1913, Shipping clerk in a grocery house
--Alice, 34, age at first marriage 27, born in England (parents also), year of immigration 1921
--Lillian, 6, born in Illinois
What does the "B" stand for .....

The information in the Illinois State Death Record falls into these categories, so 'B' is rightly the the middle initial, but the record doesn't give the name.
Last Name Eid
First Name Fustin
Middle Name B
Sex M
Race W
Age UNK
Cert # 0030557
Death Date 1946-10-27
County City Cook
This is the information from his arrival at Ellis Island - no middle initial or name on transcript
First Name: Fostin
Last Name: Eid
Ethnicity: British (Irish) I only type 'em as I see 'em
Last Place of Residence: Belfast, Ireland
Date of Arrival: Aug 31, 1913
Age at Arrival: 22y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Caledonia
Port of Departure: Londonderry
Manifest Line Number: 0019
It might appear on his marriage record, but these are not available online after 1916 (so far anyway)
Just a tidbit of info from Ellis Island records: Their were 65 Eid males through Ellis Island and only 1 with a name or initial 'B'. He was Barthel Eid from Bremmen, Germany. The others were from Cairo (3), Turkey (10), Beirut (7), Syria (9), Germany (5), eight from Norway and 3 each from France and Switzerland and 1 each from Sweden, Cuba and Ireland and some with no origin given.

Frances,
Interesting information on the origins of the name! Looks like several different names ended up anglicized to "Eid", but I would agree with Maggie that Norwegian is most likely to be the correct one in the case of Fostin.
The marriage record should be available in Chicago, and the naturalization papers also? In the 1930 census it was indicated that he had submitted his first papers, but was not yet naturalized, so it would be some time soon after 1930.
Aha! And Alice & Lillian are on a Boston passenger list for 1934. They must have gone back to visit her family in England. She is still an alien, but lists Fostin as her guarantee in the U.S. Does that mean he is already a citizen? Perhaps.
Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943 Record
Name: Alice Eid
Arrival Date: 14 Apr 1934
Age: 37 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Georgic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Fostin Eid
Last Residence: United States of America
Microfilm Roll Number: 395
I just noticed that in his WWI draft registration card, he states he was born in Penang Settlement States, Indo-China-- is that where you got it, Maggie? And of course, no middle initial or name on the card
Best,
Sarah

Oh, and do you know who the other Fostin (spelled "Ead") in Chicago was in 1930, living with the family of Robert McNalley?
Ead Fostin, lodger, 17, born in Ireland, parents also, immigrated in 1929, order clerk in a tailor shop
It's such an unusual name, that I thought there must be a connection!

Hello Frances & Sarah
thankyou for your messages your intrest in trying to help me is appreciated.
How interesting that Alice & Lilian came back to england on a visit
is it possible to view Boston passenger lists like you can do with Ellis island
records what i mean is can you get to see the details of each passenger on line like the personal details of height weight etc? i must google for that one!! i have a possible family for a Alice going through ellis island and have taken her family back through the english census' but so far i have nothing concrete to say it is the right one.
Sarah i got his place of birth from the 1901 census ,but had not even thought about exploring the possibility that he was in the forces in ww1. so thank you for that info.
the Fostin Ead in the 1930 census with the Mcnally family i can also claim he would have been the nephew of Fostin B and he left Ireland to seek his fortune in America but returned back to Ireland .I have quite a few Eid's that went backwards & forwards that i have never found records of on ellis island like Lorenzo/Laurence who was already there in 1913 when Fostin B set sail as that is who he was going to stay with on the ellis island record.
Thankyou both once again
kindest regards
maggie

Hi Maggie,
Have you got the Boston Passenger List for Minnie, Robert & Samuel Eid and Mary Ann McNally 19 Nov 1913? They look to be attached to Lorenzo. I'll be glad to send them to you if you like. And Alice & Lillian went over in 1927 as well. Oh, and on second look, I see there is a second page on all of the passenger lists
with personal info
I've sent you a pm about it.
Cheers,
Sarah
