Hi Karen,

I think you are right anout the wife's name being Julia. It certainly looks that way to me.

The person he was going to see in Brooklyn looks to me to be Polish. The first name looks like Jan. The second name begins with an 'L' and end in 'vich' I think.

I'm going to look at it some more and get back to you- if someone doesn't come up with the right name first. If you are still having trouble uploading the image the name can be found here:

Hi Karen:

I PM'd you last night with what I could make out on the handwritten document.

I've looked at the Ellis Island site and there is a transcribed option for the document, unfortunately, it does not give the final destination ... BUT, it does give you the option of looking at both pages, for Marton and JULIA

What a lot of information they gathered - down to the colour of their hair/eyes/complexion!

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but the person Marton and Julia are visiting is Julia's brother. I'm pretty certain his first name is Jan. I've tried looking though the 1910 and 1920 US federal census but can't see a match for the surname yet.

The chances are that Jan was from Austria too.

Some of the Austrian Jans I found living in Brooklyn in 1910 were:

Jan Wisnieski
Jan Quashnik
Jan Vrosizek
Jan Pokodofsky
Jan Matchunk
Jan Shmiesak
Jan Trybulski
Jan Lewandowski

Hi Karen,

A very difficult one! I uploaded a "cut" version of the second page with your entry 11 to the Gallery to see if a little more of the writing would be of any help to others looking at it (not sure where I put it though). Could it possibly be something like Latuvich?
