Just a quick update. As a result of Jean's breakthrough I bit the bullet and eventually made contact with the origin of the story about the death at sea. Turned out to be Margaret's half brother's grandson. He claims they actually died sometime after 1930/1931 as it was at their suggestion that his grandparents moved south from Canada to Chicago around that time, and family legend has it they went on vacation at sea and died when their ship hit an iceburg. So I've two tasks now. Really hit that 1930 census and find them, and then investigate deaths at sea and iceburgs. Should keep me going for a while.
Aso found Albert Hume and his wife Fannie, both died in Florida.
Thanks to all who've helped once again.

Re: Thomas and George Massie .....
I am coming in a little late to this but just looked at the first image. The numbers are very simular to the number scheme for a petition for naturalization. The date of original immigration had to be verified and when it was done the original arrival records were annotated with the petition number.Maisie wrote:In the first there is a series of numbers below his occupation, and I wondered if anyone knew their significance.

Oh darnnit....I re-read your posts and I'm using the wrong Margaret!!!! I was thinking Margaret daughter and you were meaning Margaret the mother....drat it!!
Anyway...this was my extreme long shot and I honestly doubted it was them..........the ages are out a bit and the places of birth are messed up entirely if it is I was trying to create a second marriage for George and this one came close to making sense........
Name: George Massey
Home in 1930: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Age: 53
Estimated birth year: abt 1877
Birthplace: Illinois
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Mary A
Race: White
Occupation: none stated
Owns home value: 5,000
Household Members:
George Massey 53 b. IL parents b. Ireland. age 35 at first marriage,
Mary A Massey 52 b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland, age 34 at first marriage, immig in 1900
Catherine Massey 18 dau, b. IL
Colette Massey 14 dau, b. IL
George Massey 17 son b. IL
Charles Massey 12 son b. IL
It's very possible they were in Canada and didn't return to the US until after the 1930 census was taken.
No help at all.........
Best wishes
Jean
