Providence, RI question for Marilyn

Well here's the scoop

Tried the obit archives at http://www.projo.com/ and didn't find either of them listed.

I called the Warwick Library and their two film readers are broken down, so the gal offered to look and call me back if she finds Ralph. Their films for the Providence Journal are for the years 1964-1997.

OK I'm off to do something else.

Carol, I forgot to mention this

Yesterday when I was at the archives, I noticed the 1875 Census so naturally I had to ask

It seems that Rhode Island took its own State Census every five years, starting in 1875-1935

I took a quick look for my father who was born in 1930, but wasn't listed in that census, nor was he listed in the 1935

Not sure if Ancestry has this Rhode Island Census included in their database, but I thought I'd mention it just in case Alexander & Eleanor made an appearance and it listed what year they were married?

Ancestry says they have it through 1890, but no Herons showed when I searched so I don't think the records are complete. Only four results came up, all for Herin in the 1700's.

Hi Carol,

I'm wondering if the "Heron" family is the reason for Alexander & Eleanor remaining in Rhode Island?

The 1875 RI Census Index was in a card file and the rest on micro-film. I can't promise you when, but the next time I'm at the archives I'll have a look through the films.

I must remember to ask what type of arrangement Ancestry has with the State of Rhode Island or any other state or Country. In other words, did Ancestry pay to copy this information and does the state get a piece of the pie or was it a one time fee, paid by Ancestry to offer these types of records?

Both good questions!

Don't know what the Ancestry arrangement is.

As to Alexander, I've never found his crossing either because of the mistranscriptions or just because the records during 1880-1890's are less than wonderful and terrific. Also, he had a whole bunch of cousins etc. and I really don't have a handle yet on how many came over.

US State census’s are starting to surface on Record Search at http://labs.familysearch.org/ but nothing there yet for RI

Hi Marilyn,

Never got out the door yesterday. We had almost 6 inches of rain and several tornadoes popping up! Everything is much quieter here today and we are planning on making the trip to the city tomorrow.

I'm still limiting my time on the computer and that seems to work--sort of! Hope to get back to normal soon!

Thanks Alan for the information. Ancestry says there is more to come. They are trying to compensate for the loss of the 1890 US federal census.
