I don't have any problem driving in Boston or Scotland, but New York scares me
Today AAA told me that Penn Station is a five minute walk to Times Square, but it could take 15-20 minutes in a taxi with the meter running, well what more can I say?
So its $7 for an all day pass on the subway? Does the subway go into Manhattan? Have you ever been over to Castle Garden? The subway makes me nervous, but I'll bring my pepper spray
maybe I've watched too much NYPD?

Hi BJ,I avoid driving in Manhattan, as much as possible (but that's as much that I want to avoid parking -- and parking fees!). But I drive in Brooklyn and on Staten Island frequently -- they are no worse than driving here in Philadelphia
So my standard way to get to Mahattan is to drive to the Staten Island ferry terminal, park ($6 all day....), take the ferry (free) to Manattan, then get an all-day unlimited use pass for the subway for $7.
The DC beltway - now, that's another story. I dread that..... but it is the best way to get to my brother's, where I can stay in the DC area for free and take advanatge of the Library of COngress, the DAR library, and free museums.

My rule of thumb for Manhattan:marilyn morning wrote:

Up to 20 or or blocks north/south --> walk.
Up to 4 blocks east/west --> walk.
Or various combinations thereof - for example, I'd walk if it is 2 blocks e/w plus 10 n/s.
Other than that --> subway. Yes, it definitely is in Manhattan.
You can get an all-day pass for $7 (use the automated machine to buy one - it is under unlimited ride). There may be longer periods for better prices, but I've never used those. Best way to get around when it's too far for feet.
Funny the difference in perspective: Taxis are scary - drive too fast, too expensive, and so on.

To be perfectly honest with ya, I haven't taken a taxi in over 30 years and that was only because I had to get off the subway in Boston (slight case of claustrophobia
) I've out grown it now
We didn't have much public transportation in the sticks where I grew up. I hope you'll be able to join us, it will be fantastic to have a tour guide.
AAA is creating my trip tik and I'll pick it up next week, but how far is Battery Park away from Penn Station? And am I being realistic to plan on visiting Castle Garden, Ellis Island, Statute Of Liberty, Times Square (for a little shopping) oh yeah, an have lunch with Tracey
within a 7 hours time frame?
Regards

Its going to be a long day, thats for sure! You and Alison can catch up on some issues on the way to RI and (here's the surprise) when my sister, Valerie and I board the train
Yup, it didn't take much convincing her to join us.
We've actually been planning on making this trip for a while and here's our opportunity, so we're going for it. As far as entertaining ourselves, we can play cards, they'll be light to carry.

Hi Jean,I looked online at Amtrak last night and saw the choices and the LONG time it takes to go from Beantown to the Big Apple. .....What will we do to entertain ourselves???

What are you kidding me/us? Of course you're more then welcome to join us! I'm going to send you a pm, asking you a few questions, if that's alright with you? Questions, as in a good deli so we can pick up lunch to share with Tracey.
