Sarah Farquhar

I am trying to find Sarah McKay Farquhar. She was born in Barrhead , Renfrewshire in 1884 and was last seen in Scotland in 1901. All her brothers and sisters remained in Scotland and I have all their deaths , but can't find Sarah.

There was a 23 year old Sarah Farquhar who left Glasgow for New York in 1907. She was going to stay with a friend John Bowden - who was the same age and from Barrhead - he went to USA in 1906. They both gave an address of a Daniel Aitken ( John's cousin ) in Kearney, New Jersey.
I can find no trace of either of them after that ! There was a 24 year old Sarah Bowden who returned to Glasgow from Newport News, Virginia in 1908 - but I don't know what happened to her either !

I am fairly sure that this is my Sarah - but am at a loss as to what happened to her - so any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Morag:

Probably going with the obvious, but have you checked for her death under Bowden? Or even that she returned to the US or went elsewhere?

What about under Farq* in case there is a problem with the spelling in the death registry?

Have you given the birth year as +/- a few years, as someone who may not have known her exact age could have been the informant?

On ScotlandsPeople, there is a death of Sarah Bowden between 1908 and 1974 who was born 1874 +/- 1.

Also, a search for Sarah Farquha* dying 1908-1974 born 1874 +/-5 pops up only 9 deaths, so it may be worth a look to see if any of them has a middle name or is in the right geographic area.

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried the various spellings of Farquhar - a g instead of the q is a common one !

I only found the Bowden connection a few days ago and I had tried for a death with +/- 2 years - my computer is freezing today whenever I try to but credits on Scotlands People - so I will try later - it may be trying to tell me something ! I had found one possible death - but too late for images. All her siblings lived until the 1950's and 60's - so my visit to Edinburgh is becoming more important.

Although the Ellis Island manifest had John Bowden coming from Barrhead , he doesn't seem to have been born there - so that is also worth checking out.

Thanks again she must be out there somewhere !
