Trying to find out what happened to James Hackland Wilson after 1891 census. He seems to have disappeared after that. His wife divorced him in 1900. I think he went back to Canada - have tried to search for him but don't have access to Ancestry and was like looking for a needle in a haystack on the census as I don't know where about he would have gone.
He was born c1857 in Oxford House Manitoba. On 1891 census he is in Glasgow as a lodger. His occupation is listed as draper.

This looks quite like him in 1901 - maybe? The occupation certainly matches although he seems a bit young to be retired.

Hi
thankyou - it could well be him.
Family story is he went back to Canada which is still a possibility
Hoping to go to NRH next month so it might help narrow the search if he is still in Scotland
thanks again

Hi
The second two are possible - not the first one though.
A bit of a coincidence that I had other relatives from different side of the family who emigrated to Canada on the Duchess of Bedford
thanks again

Hello Fiona,
See previous post and Sporran’s comments re Freda’s wedding http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ght=jobson
It looks like James was definitely still in Edinburgh in 1900 (&1901).
Glasgow Herald, Monday, July 9, 1900
Court of Session
Outer House
(Before Lord Low, for Lord Kincairney.)
WILSON v. WILSON.
Proof was led before Lord Low in an action of divorce by Isabella Jobson Howison or Wilson, school teacher, residing in Stromness, against her husband, James Hackland Wilson, warehouseman in Glasgow, latterly of no fixed place of residence, and cited as residing at 1 Jubilee Lodging House, Grassmarket, Edinburgh. In her evidence the pursuer stated that she was married to the defender at Stromness in 1887. There were six children of the marriage. He left her in 1895, and she had been supporting herself and children since that time. Decree was given on the ground of desertion.

DIVORCE—WILSON v. WILSON.
Lord Low, for Lord Kincairney, heard proof in an action of divorce by Isabella Jobson Hourston or Wilson, school teacher, Stromness, Orkney, against her husband, James Hackland Wilson, sometime warehouseman, Glasgow, and now residing at Jubilee Lodging-House, Grassmarket. In answer to Mr T. B. Morison, the pursuer (37) said she was married in July 1885. Six children were born of the marriage. Shortly after the marriage her husband became addicted to drink. Her husband left her in Stromness with her mother, while he went to a situation in Glasgow, and she had not heard from him since 1895. She had been supporting herself and her children. Decree was granted.
Counsel for the Pursuer—Mr T. B. Morison. Agent—James Ayton, S.S.C.

DEATHS
WILSON.—At 10 Argyle Crescent, Portobello, EDINBURGH, on 6th December 1950, in her 89th year. ISABELLA JOBSON, formerly of Stromness, Orkney, widow of JAMES HACKLAND WILSON. Funeral to Piershill Cemetery to-morrow (Friday.) Friends attending please meet at cemetery at 2.30 p.m.
Mrs Wilson’s death notice shows her as a Widow whereas I don’t think a divorcee ever becomes a widow but that may have been just the way the family wanted it recorded. I get the feeling from the way the death notice is worded that there may have been some contact after the divorce.
If you don’t have these and you want the images please send me a PM and I’ll send them.
All the best,
Alan
