Moore DNA

Post by topaz » Fri Feb 20, 2009 2:32 am

my husband's dna doesn't match closely with the Moores on the Moore test list at http://small-stuff.com/MOORE/results.htm. the closest match is 7 distance to the oldest line in group two. he also leans a little more towards Scots dna than otherwise. it would be interesting to know if he is of Scots Moore ancestry.
right now we're a bit stuck in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania with Thomas B. Moore. that is, I believe he is of the Hanover twp, Beaver Co., PA group of Moores but haven't succeeded in proving it.
Thomas was born about 1810. he seems to come from a line, if the family story is correct, of only sons-whether more than one son was born in Thomas family, we don't know, but he had 1 son and 6 daughters, and his son, John Scott, had one son and one daughter. so there is some truth to the family story but I don't know how many generations it runs. the more recent generations had more than one son.
if you are working on Scots Moore dna, please go to Ysearch.com and look at U6PKB that's my husband's ID#, and it should have 60 of his 67 markers listed. the last 7 failed to test and we are hoping they will come up on the 27th.
if a more knowledgeable person can see that his Moores are not Scots, please do set us strait, dna is new territory for us.
thank you.

Yes I have just ventured into this arena with a one name study & a MTDNA test too.
It's very confusing & could do with a scientist to explain it all.I do have a friend who works on DNA research but even when he tried to explain it all my eyes glazed over -it was all Greek to me!
I do understand though that with certain variants in the DNA strands it can give a fairlty accurate account of where certain lines originated.
It can even give areas where the person grew up via levels of mercury & other trace elements etc but that would only be of interest to someone who didn't know their own origins e.g a foundling.

further on my husband's dna

Post by topaz » Sun Feb 22, 2009 6:01 pm

I was dismayed and annoyed to learn that FTdna had yanked all markers from ysearch past 37 a few days ago. I had hand input them quite carefully, and there was no reason for them to remove them. after a number of frustrating and disappointing experiences with FTdna, I have turned my back on them for the interum and will not visit the site until the target date for the final attempt to get the last 6 markers (61-67) for my husband, which is Feb. 27. FTdna is a very good company in general, but some of us are having problems with it.
my own dna test came back so common all it tells me is that I am related to about half of everyone on the planet.

if you go to Family Tree DNA Forum (which is free to all) and read up on the posts there, you'll get the general idea of dna testing, as well as get to read what some knowledgeable people say about it-which can be hard to understand, but a lot of us get on the forum and ask beginner questions and get understandable answers to them.
