1911 Canadian Census Now Online .....

Post by Linda Malpass » Fri Jul 22, 2005 3:40 am

Received this update today from my local Family History Society, the 1911 Canadian Census is now online.
:D

Linda

Greetings All.

My thanks to Peggy Johnson who just sent me an email to advise that
scanned images of the 1911 National Census of Canada are now online and
accessible at:

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... dex-e.html

Thanks also go to Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, and
the staff at Library and Archives Canada for their hard work in putting
these valuable records online sooner than was expected. This will now
enable volunteers to begin indexing the 1911 records.

Pardon me while I go surfing for my ancestors in 1911. <]:-)

Enjoy the Census!

Hi,

It's ages since the original post here was submitted so I hope someone is watching. I've gone to the website but I cannot figure out how to search for an individual. Help! I'm looking for James Mitchell who enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Calgary in 1915 - want to see if he was in Canada in 1911. Is it possible?

It's okay - just went back and saw that it's NOT SEARCHABLE BY FAMILY NAME!!!

Is voluntarily transcribing the 1911 census, I think they are about 70% done. It is fully searchable and gives access to the actual images too.

Hope this helps

Barbara,
I notice you are from PEI.
I just found yesterday some ancestors who arrived in Pictou in 1848 and then went to PEI.

Where do I now search for records in Canada for the family..

Any help would be appreciated. I don't think any of them would be alive by 1911 but I may be able to trace descendents

Hi Wini:

I married an Islander and so have been here for some years. PEI is very genealogy friendly - when I came here the first question was "who is your father" so they could figure out your line. Most families can trace back to when their ancestors arrived here.

Do you know where on the Island your ancestors came to?

The best site I can recommend is

http://www.islandregister.com/

If you need anything from the records office in Charlottetown I do go occasionally, so let me know :)

You can search the 1911 census by surname by province and territory. It makes the search much easier if you know what province your ancestor lived in. Even if you don't there are only 12 provinces and territories so it isn't too difficult. Bear in mind, however, that transcribing is only about 76% complete nationally and the percentage of completion varies widely from province to province.

Suthpaw,

it's printing as we speak and I think I've got him first go!

Thanks

Thanks Barbara

As far as I can gather the Gunns all settled in South Granville, PEI but that is as far as I have got so far.
Will hopefully find time to do some research in the next couple of days.
