Death:Leckie Portland Maine 1895

Post by eiggam » Sat May 16, 2009 2:27 pm

I m looking for info on Archiebald Leckie who went to the states sometime in the 1860's. He was killed in Sept 1895 after being knocked down by a train on the Portland Maine line. Have a copy of the original inquest report
but only details about him are his name. Any info on how I could find out more? Appreciate any news.

Hi Eiggam
You can find Archibald and his family in 1841 in Scotland, as mentioned in your earlier post
viewtopic.php?p=108230&highlight=#108230
You should be able to gather some more info on him from the later census years e.g. 1851, 1861, before he left for the States.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Eiggam,

Here's a link for the State of Maine Archives, where you should be able to send for a copy of Archiebald's death cert

Maybe I can be of some help on this one.....only live about 30 miles from Portland. What kind of info are you hoping to find? Maine instigated standard record keeping in 1892 so I should be able to find a DC for him if I ever get back to the library. The early ones don't give much detail but might give a father's name.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

I was waiting for you to show up :D

In the State of Maine after 1892 you can get a death certificate from the Library? I didn't know that, then again why would I? I haven't any family from Maine. :D

Marilyn

Have you found him in the 1870 and 1880 US census returns?

He's likely in a passenger list somewhere. If you are lucky, he'll have come through one of the ports that is indexed and on-line. Side note: if he ended up in Maine, it's possible he went through Canada first.

The Portland paper likely had more details but it doesn't seem to be on-line or in the databases I have access to. Maybe contacting the Portland Public Library, the Maine State Library, or the Maine Historical Society?

Searching the 19th century newspaper database: There's a death notice, 22 Oct 1893, Chicago paper (Daily Interocean) for a Rossie Leckie, aged 23 years 23 days, died 21 Oct at home 386 39th St, wife of Archibald and daughter of Jennie Nichols. Asks Mobile, Olcksburg and Yazoo papers to copy.

Same database and paper 9 Aug 1896 shows Archibald Leckie in the 'At the resorts' column at Tabor's Landing, MI. Not the man is question but maybe a relative?
McGee (Donegal to Edinburgh), Jamieson/Guthrie (Leith), Keddie (Peebles, Galashiels), Little (Cavers, Traquair), Arthur (Galashiels) , Paterson (Edinburgh, with occ. spells in Stirling, Greenock, Leith), Ralston (Glasgow to Stirling), Greig (Elgin)

Not just any library Marilyn....I'm referring to the Portland Public Library which is the closest spot for me to access the microfilms described here: http://www.maine.gov/sos/arc/archives/g ... genie1.htm If I find it I can get a photocopy of the microfilm page for a quarter...much cheaper than ordering from the Archives.

A Leckie Portland Maine

Thanks to you all for your help. :D

Jean- Cumberland County Coroner's Inquest taken at Portland Maine on September 26th 1894. Archiebald Leckie killed on the Maine Central Railroad, Sunday September 23rd 1894. I have no final outcome as to what the verdict was in the paperwork I have. I Know he went to the States in the 1860's and would be interested to know if he married, where he worked, lived etc and did he have a family.
If you are able to obtain a death certificate that would be terrific and any other information on him would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

Portland Public Library has newspaper archives too so I might just be able to find more on his sudden demise. Sadly all my online access to Portland news does not include this time frame.
