Hi Trish
There are no states in Canada, we have provinces.
Since confederation in 1867 our provinces & abbreviations can be found at http://canadaonline.about.com/library/bl/blpabb.htm
Map of Canada - http://www.canada-maps.org/canada-map.htm (current)
Another good map with a little history - http://www.craigmarlatt.com/canada/prov ... ories.html
Pre confrederation Map bef. 1867 - http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/m ... federation
Upper Canada pre confederation = Ontario & part of Quebec
Lower Canada " " = Quebec
It's a good start . Just google Canada and find all sorts of things

Hi Izzie

My ignorance is obvious when I call regions states that aren't - apologies. We talk of federation in Australia - I shall have to study confederation. Thank you so much for the links - very much appreciated. The folks I am tracing seem to be mainly in Ontario.

Hi Trish:

There are additional helpful sources on Canada at http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10349

The Canadian Encyclopedia is a solid source for concise Canadian information. This entry on Confederation is pretty concise. http://www.canadianencyclopedia.ca/inde ... RTA0001842

Thank you for the additional links - I am seriously feeling quite uneducated in relation to my lack of knowledge - from school days I can still recite the names of the great lakes - so why didn't I associate Ontario with Canada - how embarrassing. The maps and basic geography are very much as needed.
