Gravells 1920-30 Census .....

Post by Tracey » Sat Jan 07, 2006 12:24 am

This really is a long shot.
I am trying to find.........Gravell or Gravells on either 1920 or 30,s U.S census. All i know is that his name is Walter no idea of wifes first name or their ages and i am 90% sure they are both Scottish. I have an address 2860 Decatur Avenue, Bronx - 58 - New York NY.
This is off a passenger ticket from Cunard White Star - The Queen Mary - date of travel Jan 27th (but no year !). New York to Southampton.
Mrs Gravell is travelling on to 28 Bank Street Aberdeen to stay with Mrs Barber.
Going purely on the ships short timeline pre WW2 the ticket is either 1936-9 or after 1947- im hoping on the first and that the Gravells were at home in the Bronx in 1930 !

Good luck to anyone that is kind enough to look for me :D

Looked around real fast but not too sure if there are any matches without some birthdates to narrow it down. However, here is one in Richmond Town in NY that seems to be a possibilty. Richmnond COunty is in Staten Island. One of the boroughs in NYC.

1920 Census
34 Curtis Place, Ricmond, Richmond County, NY
Walter Gravell, age 40, came in 1904 from Scotland. Ferry Boat Captain
Emma, age 40, came in 1904 from Scotland
Margaret, age 10, born in NY
Constance, age 8, born in NY

They are at the same residence in 1910 also.
Surnames
Yuill: Paisley, Renfrewshire
Andrew, Parker & Turnbull: Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire & Paisley, Renfrewshire
Cochrane: Loudon, Ayshire
Kennedy: Glasgow

Thank you Kristin for that. When i saw they had children i was smiling then saw the birth dates ( Im looking for three children b 1816-18-19 in Newark NJ and Chicago Illinois, none show up on any US census under the names we knew them as) so this means they are not their parents, and its looking increasing likely that they came to Scotland before the 1920 census. Ho hum
Huge thanks for looking

Hello
Here is what I found
1920 census Mahattan New York County New York listed under the spelling of Walter Savelle listed with him is his wife and daughter....
Keren Happuch Wilkins came to the U.S. on Jan 28 1911 she listed father as Isaac Wilkins and in 1912 her brother Albert came and again in jan 24 1920 with his wife and daughter then on June 2 1913 listed father William Wilkins in c/o of DR. Peters 10-48 Park Ave Mahattan. William Wilkins and wife Emily and son William came here and stayed Keren seems to have return to Aberdeen and married Walter Gravells and return to the U.S. on Dec.25 1919 they return from Scotland after a visit on Aug. 6 1923 that was Walter, Keren and Alice Emily given Mrs Alice Gravells at 28 Castle Street Aberdeen and her father as William Wilkins of 419 West 45th Street Mahattan .Then on Nov 1937 Alice Emily Gravells return from Aberdeen listed her father as Walter Gravells of Hawthorne New Jersery..Alice Emily date of birth was Feb 9 1921 born in New York County New York.Idid found Keren Gravells in the s.s. death index born Dec 5 1884 and died Aug. 1973 in Fort Lauderdale Broward Flordia ..You can find them on the following sites ancestry.com for cencus and some of the ship log from the phiadelphia and ellisisland .org for the rest of ship logs.. all most forgot Albert and Walter were both fishermen and William Wilkins was from Lee Green England / Emily was from Ramsgate England and William was from Aberdeen...Walter was from Leith Scotland
Hope this helps good luck
Nancy

Wow Nancy
Thanks for all that
I need to straighten it all out ...................
1920 census Mahattan New York County New York listed under the spelling of Walter Savelle listed with him is his wife and daughter
So this is Walter, Keren (Happuch Wilkins) and Alice Emily.

Kerens parents are William Wilkins and Emily ? - i have them travelling to America 24th May 1913 with daughter Emily and son William - Scottish address -daughter Henrietta Barber 63 Victoria Road Torry.

In 1911 Keren states her fathers name as Isaac Wilkins of 12 Schoolhill Aberdeen. In 1923 names her father as William Wilkins of 419 West 45th Street Mahattan.
Somewhere between 1911-1919 she returns to Aberdeen and marries Walter Gravells and travel back to America 25th Dec 1919.
In 1923 they have also been back to Aberdeen for a long visit and return to America 6th August 1923 and gives the address she was at as Mrs Alice Gravells at 28 Castle Street Aberdeen.
Keren Gravells (miss Happuch Wilkins) born Dec 5 1884 and died Aug. 1973 in Fort Lauderdale Broward Flordia

Walter and Kerens daughter Alice Emily Gravells has been in Aberdeen and returns back to America on Nov 1937 - listed her father as Walter Gravells of Hawthorne New Jersery
Alice Emily date of birth was Feb 9 1921 born in New York County New York

1919-1923 i cant view as i dont have an Ancestry sub anymore

Her brother Albert went to America 13th April 1912 and gave an address of 12 Schoolhill Aberdeen and travelling to his siter Keren Happuch Wilkins 777 West End Ave N.Y, and again on Jan 24th 1920 with his wife and daughter listed father William Wilkins in c/o of DR. Peters 10-48 Park Ave Mahattan. He gave a Scottish address as sister Mrs Barber 9 Wellington Place Aberdeen. His wife gave an address - mother Mrs Gillies 46 Holburn Road Aberdeen.

Phew :!:
Well it has uncovered a "Barber" and all the addresses are in the vacinity of where my lot were at the time. All i need to do now is work out if and how she is connected

Huge thanks for taking the time to look
