Peter Gray born CANADA .....

Post by momat » Sun Feb 26, 2006 8:17 am

Trying to establish exactly when and where Peter Gray was born .
1901 Census for Glasgow states that Peter Gray aged 26 was born in CANADA.
Marriage cert also in Glasgow states Parents John Gray & Isabella ? (unclear).
Please does any one know where I can check up on this one ?

Cheers

You can upload an image of the marriage certificate to the Gallery here, and there are lots of expert pairs of eyes who will be delighted to have a look and see if they can interpret Isabella's surname.

But however we interpret the surname there, you'll have to square it with the surname as reported on his father's death register entry...... on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk search for the death Peter GRAY, born 1875 +/-1 year and you'll find the record in the same location, - Old Kirkpatrick, Dunbartonshire, BTW, is not Glasgow :!:

I initially reckoned that the capital letter on the marriage register entry was "B", but could it also be "G" ?? ................

(got dumped from the site as DavidWW so had to re-enter in my other name....)

The provincial and territorial governments, not the federal government are responsible for the births, deaths and marriages. Historical records are available, but without knowing which province, you'd have a large task trying to find your information. There is no online index of names.

The census (federal government) are available from mid 1600 through 1911. Only the last three have been indexed by name, with searchable indexes. Prior to 1901, you need to search by location, obtain the microfilm and scroll through, looking for the surname.

Canada did not keep records of passengers for out-bound ships.

I checked the limited 1871 census for New Brunswick, was able to find several Gray entries, but none matching the names Peter, John or Isabelle.

I checked the IGI for a birth of Peter Gray to John and Isa* Gray, in Canada 1875 (+/- 5) with no hits.
