Ontario Death 1872 - how to follow up? .....

Post by LesleyB » Sat Mar 04, 2006 12:24 am

Hi
I have a death of a Robert Balingall (number and placing of Ls in this name varies - varies from 2 or 3 ...to 4!) who died in Ontario:
  • 19 December 1872 p.4
At Ayr Ontario, Canada in the 21st Ult. in his 90th year, Robert Ballingall Esq. formerly of Balmalcolm. Friends will please accept this intimation.
I think I know who he is ....but is there a way to confirm his parents from a Canadian death record? Can I find these online?

Thanks
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
There is a site that is starting to put Ontario deaths online, but no Balingalls yet. There is a lady, Mary Crandall who will do a look up and send you a copy of the certificate for a small fee

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... quests.htm

Whether you will get the information you seek is another thing! I have several from Ontario and although there is a line for such alot of the time they just put in "unknown" -VERY frustrating!

I have relatives in Ayr, Ontario, it is very nice place!

Kind regards
Barbara

Lesley,
There was no cemetery in Ayr until 1877, so I had a look at the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (it's not complete)
http://www.islandnet.com/cgi-bin/ms2/jveinot/search
and there is a Robert Ballingall buried in Mountview cemtery in what used to be Galt now Cambridge, I don't know if he is yours or not, but it is the same township of North Dumfries so has possiblities.

Kind regards
Barbara

Lesley,

Another thought occurred to me. The 1871 census of Ontario is online for head of household only.

If you subscribe to this rootsweb mailing list

CAN-ONT-CENSUS-1871-L-request@rootsweb.com

and ask for a lookup on the above Ballingals someone will have access and give you details of the rest of their households.

Kind regards

I have been looking up Ontario deaths on Ancestry.com and ran a check for Robert Bal* in 1872. His death is indexed and here are the details:-

Name: Robert Ballingal
Died: 21 Nov 1872
Age: 89 years & 6 months
Profession: Farmer
Where born: Fifeshire, Scotland
Cause of death: Senile debility, 6 weeks
Physician: Mr Wm Soritt, Ayr
Informant: Mr Wm Soritt, Ayr
When registered: 27 Nov 1872
Denomination: Church of Scotland
Registrar: Thos Ballingal, North Dumfries, Waterloo

Unfortunately parents are not given although they do appear in many other Counties. It is interesting to see that the Registrar is also a Ballingal!

Hope this is of some help

Mal

Mal & Barbara
Thank you so much for all the info. Things are looking like they are beginning to fall into place... the age at death for Robert agrees exactly with the birthdate of the Robert I thought he was, so I'm pretty sure now he is my man. He was the only surviving son of my 4th great grand aunt Janet Goalen 1755-1845. So, this probably means that I'm very distantly related to all the Ballingals in that part of Canada!

The census info is interesting too - I was pretty sure Robert had a son called Thomas who died 30 March 1876, at Stratheden, Ayr, Ontario, from the same Fife newspaper. I now wonder if he, as well as being a farmer (as the Ballingals were in Fife) had taken on the job of Registrar. The David Ballingall in the census would appear to be another son, using a cross check on the IGI.

Anyway, thank you again for your input. I'm beginning to feel that I have a bit more of a grip on Robert now!
Best wishes
Lesley
