John Boyd ANDERSON .....

If someone ever comes across mention of John Boyd ANDERSON born 19th April 1868 in Campbelltown Argyll will you please let me know. His father was William Anderson and mother Christina McAlpine. He went across the pond probably in the 1920's but I don't know whether it was USA or Canada. I have been told Canada but don't know where. He was a Commercial Traveller. I would really like to find this one.

Thanks Marilyn I knew about the first but not the other. It looks useful.

Most of the Canadian links I have looked at need you to know where the person settled and being British means he is not on immigration or naturalisation records.

I have found out that he was in Detroit in 1928 and heading for a relative in New York. If anyone is able to check for his death in either of those places I would appreciate it.

Hi Mallog,
Did you get the Detroit to New York info from the Passenger Lists? I note that there are two John Boyd Andersons, both the right age, both with addresses in Detroit, who sailed to New York from Glasgow a week apart in July 1928

Do you know what that was about?

Michigan, Wayne County, Detroit City, Ward Four, Block No. 41
661 Seward Street
Anderson John B, Head, 62, age at first marriage: 19, born in Scotland, Masseur in an athletic club
----Agnes, Wife, 41, age at first marriage: 31, born in Scotland

There are 17 lodgers in the house. Let me know if you want to know their names.

Hi Mallog - there are one or two bits on Ancestry that you may/may not have. Two passenger lists from Glasgow to New York in July 1928, both have John Boyd Anderson with same details, one ship is SS Transylvania dep 7 July 1928 arr NY 15 July 1928. The other one is SS Cameronia, dep 14 Jul 1928 to arr 22 July 1928 - this has a note that it didn't sail. If its the same guy on both, only explanation I can come up with is he was booked on the one that didn't sail, was notified it had been cancelled and went a week earlier??? Don't know how feasible that is. Both documents are lists of US citizens so these were not the original leaving of Scotland papers.

The other thing is a Manifest from Dept of Labor, Immigration Service relating to the trip from Detroit to NY to see friend. Date looks like 1924. There's a whole load of info on that wee card that might fill in some holes (if you still have any). For instance it says he was in USA from 1921-1924. Looks like the 1928 journey was returning to the States after a holiday.

Haven't found a death though.

If you haven't got these bits of papers already, please let me know and I'll send you the details.

Pinkshoes thank you I had that and yes the two journeys confused me until I noticed he hadn't sailed.
Sarah I didn't have the census although I did have the address. Now I'm looking for his "marriage" as his first wife didn't die till the 1950's and I would be surprised if he had been divorced. It's interesting that "Agnes" is Scottish. The list of lodgers might be useful to see if there were any relatives amongst them

Hmmm, the plot thickens! You might look a long time for that "marriage"...!

Only one of the lodgers is a Scot: Samuel Gordon, age 33, an iron worker. I'll send you the rest in a PM.

How exciting!

According to this manifest document, wife Margaret was his "nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came". So she didn't get to go to the States. There's an address for her, which looks like Albert Villa, Dunoon, Scot.

Not sure from your post if you have this, or if it was the two passenger lists you had. Please let me know if you don't have it, as it's a wee treasure chest.

Later : just a thought - the "friend" John was off to see in Detroit - do you know anything about that? Just wondered if it could have been Agnes?

Sorry i keep thinking up something else to ask - Sally, can I ask where you see the address in 1930 census. I looked at the image earlier today and dismissed it cos of Agnes, and John's occupation "Masseur" - not impossible for a commercial traveller to turn his hand to something else, but if I'd seen the address I'd have clocked it as being the same as on the passenger lists. But I can't see where you see it.
