Snowdon to the U.S. .....

Post by Davedix » Sun Aug 20, 2006 1:08 am

My Thomas W. Snowdon (Snowden, Snoddon), born Jan. 12, 1862, his wife Marjory and daughter Agnes emmigrated from Scotland to Scofield, Carbon County, Utah in 1887-1889. With that minimal information would it be possible to get the name of the ship, date of sailing and port of entry. A real long shot but perhaps someone can give me some guidance. Thank you. Dave.

Hi Dave

Not certain on the immigration piece but I'll look there next. I wasn't certain if you had data from the 1900 US census for them? If not it is a wealth of information. This year states the birth month and year for all family members, states year of immigration and whether naturalized and also gives a total of children born to a couple and a total of children now living.

In your case Thomas and Marjory and "Annie" say they arrived in 1887 and Thomas and Marjory are both listed as "NA" meaning naturalized. Annie however is listed as born July 1887 in Scotland. This certainly narrows up the time they could have arrived in the US to be between July and Dec of 1887! By 1900 they have added Mary b. Sep 1890 and Elizabeth b. March 1893 both girls b. in Utah. Marjory states she has birthed 7 children by 1900 and only 4 survive.

Do you think "Annie" is your Agnes?...or was Agnes another child that could be the 4th survivor???

Now off to look in the immigration records I have access to.....with fingers crossed...

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Dave.....long face here :( .....so far no sign of them arriving in the US. The databases are far from complete so there still might be hope but where to look and when is a staggering concept.

As for the birth of Annie in Scotland...well I'm not finding that either!!! Makes me wonder if they may have got a few dates wrong.... :-s

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Dave and Jean,
Could this be Thomas? No sign of Marjory and Agnes though. I got excited when I saw a "2" on the original, thinking it might refer to number of family members accompanying, but found looking at the first page that it referred to "number of pieces of luggage"...
All the best,
Sarah

My U.S. Snowdons

Post by Davedix » Mon Aug 21, 2006 2:39 pm

Hi Jean and Sarah: Many thanks for your information; much appreciated. The daughter's full name was Agnes Ann Fenwick S. born in Scotland (which I got from the LDS IGI) so Agnes and Annie were one and the same. Unfortunately I have not been able to confirm her birth through Scotlands People. I do have the 1900 Utah census. I'm quite sure that immigration manifest record is my Thomas, although I don't know why it did not include wife and daughter. Where could I access that manifest if I wanted a copy and also a photo of the ship Wisconsin? - - - - makes one wonder what would prompt a young family to travel from Scotland and settle in a town in Utah of less than 100 people??? Dave.

Hi Dave

In answer to your last question......I'm not sure but because in 1900 the occupation was "gold miner" just maybe it was a case of the adventure of it all! A New horizons kind of thing? But that is just speculation on my part. Certainly this country was founded in great part by the courageous and wandering spirit of Scotland.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Dave,
I got the passenger list info from Ancestry.com. Some of the entries have attached images of the ship, but the Wisconsin is not one of them, unfortunately.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Dave
if you do a google search for the SS Wisconsin or for The Guion Line
(A branch of the Liverpool & Great Western Steamship Company Ltd.) you will find the ship's history. So far I have not found any photos.

Snowdon to U.S.

Post by Davedix » Tue Aug 22, 2006 3:04 pm

Hi Jean, Sarah and Cathie;

Many, many thanks again - - - wonderful information. I believe I have everything I need on this family now to start writing an historical document. They certainly were venturesome. After having part of their family in Utah they went to Alberta, were ranchers and had more children. - - - - makes me think I lead a pretty sheltered life!!!

Best regards. Dave.
