Alice Stewart - Glasgow to Canada .....
I am trying to trace a relative Alice Stewart who left Glasgow sometime after 1901 for Canada.
I do not know if she was married or not or where she went
Does anyone have an idea where to start looking?

Hi David
Sorry for the questions but more info might help get a toe hold on this one. Do you know when Alice was born and who her parents were? Do you know when or where she died? I assuming you have her on the 1901 census in Scotland. I'm not very good with Canadian records but there are many folk on her who are so there is still a good chance you'll see some progress.
Best wishes
Jean

Alice was born in 1881 in Glasgow to William Stewart and Mary Gemmell.
She is on 1901 Census In Partick living with her mother.
I dont know death dates or locations but it is definately Canada as my Grandmother Cousin used to write to the family when she was alive.
Her middle name was Ann but this was added by her father later and subject to RCE in 1882

Hi David
I was trying to determine if Alice would have traveled alone or with other family members. She had several siblings so I wonder if you've accounted for all of them but Alice? The family in 1881 just prior to her birth consisted of:
Dwelling: 13 Graham Street
Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203689 GRO Ref Volume 646-2 EnumDist 10 Page 25
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
William STEWART M 49 M Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Shipwright
Mary STEWART M 37 F Johnston, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Wife
James STEWART 11 M Partick, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Thomas STEWART 10 M Partick, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Mary STEWART 8 F Partick, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daughter
Occ: Scholar
Isabella STEWART 4 F Partick, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daughter
Helen STEWART 2 F Partick, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daughter
I also tried to find the death of her mother Mary to see who the informant was. Have to tell you that that seems to be eluding me at the moment
although it appears certain that she was living in 1901 at census time and dead by 1911 when daughter Helen married. The lack of this apparent registration makes me wonder if there is any chance mother Mary traveled to Canada with Alice? There certainly does not appear to be a registered marriage of Alice in Scotland before 1930. Having a common surname of Stewart certainly adds a challenge to any searches due to the sheer number of possibles. I'm hoping a Canadian expert can give you some more hope. If there were any chance Alice was in the US I could check census return though 1930 but again it would be near impossible to be certain it was the right Alice Stewart.
Sorry for not being more helpful!
Best wishes
Jean

William (Father) died 1891 Partick
Mary (Mother) Died 1902 Mother
James died 1922 Partick
Thomas was still living in 1952 when his wife died in Partick
Mary is my Grt Grandmother died 1946
Alexander died 1876 in infancy
Isabella married John Millar in 1900 in Partick but is nowhere to be found on the 1901 census maybe a candidate for emigration?
Helen died 1950 (my mother remembers her)
then Alice
Informant on the death certificate is James Stewart her son.
I have checked the marriage certificates of the family that i have upto 1911 and Alice is not a witness on any of them
Cheers
David

Meant to add that my Grandmothers cousin a daughter of Helen Stewart was set to emigrate to Canada post WW2 but didnt go due to Helens Illness and subsequent death.
I would hedge a bet that she would be going to Alice's family in Canada

Hi David,
Could this be her in Edmonton City, Alberta in 1911? Looks like she is living with her sister and brother-in-law
Miller John, head, b. May 1874, age 37, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1905, carpenter
" Isabella, wife, b. October 1877, age 34, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1905
" Nicol, son, b. May 1901, age 10, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1905
" John, son, b. June 1904, age 7, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1905
" James, son, b. Dec. 1910, age 6?/12, b. in Alberta
Stewart, Alice, sister-in-law, b. August 1882, age 29, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1907
Miller, Alexander, brother, b. Nov 1889, age 32, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1909
Next door are:
Miller, Nicol, b. Feb. 1872, age 39, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1904, painter
" M. Isabella, wife, b. Oct. 1885, age 26, b. in Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1904
I won't swear by all those numbers-- the page is hard to read.
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi David,
Glad they were so easy to find
I'm afraid that is as far as I can go with them, though-- the 1911 census being the last one available online.
The following website may be helpful in looking further for a possible marriage, death record, etc.

Good luck!
