Hi Marilyn,

The ice from upstream and Lake Erie is held back upstream these days so that it does not get down to the falls and into the gorge where it used to pile up. In the 1938 such a pile-up of ice moving through the gorge broke one of the bridges between the USA and Canada from its mountings. The remains of this bridge were dynamited into a few pieces which sank into the depths of the river as the ice melted over the following three months.

I learned something from doing the tourist beat there last year.

All the best,

Pierre Berton wrote an excellent history of the Falls called (big surprise here  ) Niagara which is a fascinating read about almost 200 years of tourism and industrial development. Copies are usually available quite reasonably priced at the US version of Amazon.

And, yes, an ice boom goes across the Lake Erie end of the river every fall, and stays well into the spring. In a cold winter, the sight of all the ice it is holding back is quite dramatic.
