Marriage in Connecticut

Post by Southpaw » Tue Jun 05, 2007 7:40 pm

Thomas McMurray was born in Renfrew about 1845 and his wife Catherine McCoull was born in Paisley about 1850. They had six children between 1872 and 1888, all born in Renfrew. However, on all of the childrens' birth images it says Thomas and Catherine were married 1871, June 12th, Connecticut, U.S. Seems strange and I have no idea how they ended up in Connecticut, where in Connecticut they were married or why they returned to Scotland.

Is anyone familiar with the availability, on line or otherwise, of marriage information in Connecticut and how I could go about accessing this information if it exists?

Hi Southpaw:

Most vital records (BMDs) for Connecticut to about 1900 have been microfilmed and are available through LDS Family History Centres.

Connecticut Vital Records
http://www.cslib.org/vitals.htm

Conncecticut State Library History and Genealogy
http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm

This site breaks the state down into counties and towns and then is searchable by surnames.

Hope this helps,
Frances

Probably not much help, but the marriage doesn't show up in the various on-line records/databases at the New England Historical Genealogical Society's website. If the marriage had been in Massachusetts, it might well have. So close......and yet so far :(

There is a couple named McMurray in Canterbury, CT in the 1870 census. John, a farmer age 42, was born Scotland, Sarah 33 was b. in CT.

The 1870 census also has a Kate McCoull in New London, CT, age 19, worker in cotton mill. She's living with Mary 28 [keeping house] and Lizzie 21, worker in cotton mill, all three born in Scotland. No one readily pops up with those names (or names close enough that Ancestry's search engine thinks they are close enough) in 1860 or 1880.

Really stretching...... the NY Times has an obituary for a Robert V. W. McMurray of Poughkeepsie, NY, d. 26 May 1871 aged 23. Parents Robert and Mary B. The family was formerly of NYC.

Frances and BJ:

Thanks very much for the info. I will do some more searching and see what I can find.
