Well, is it better than " STIX " ? that's just to the south west of Dull
I hope you find it Andrew - you've got me intrigued !

I've searched a number of the old maps. Dull is a complex parish to study. Prior to the parish boundaries being straightened out by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 [seemed to take effect about 1892-1893], Dull parish consisted of many fragments of land.
There are as yet no obvious contenders for Shathley Heenes.
All the best,

I await with considerable interest the results of your viewing of the original microfilm

So do I

. I hope to view the microfilm at NRH (soon, I hope), so that if that is difficult to read, I should be able to consult the original book.
All the best,

Hi Andrew
Do you think Shathley could be Strathtay? Dull is on the River Tay and the general area along the river to the east of Dull seems to be known as Strath Tay. Also, just a couple of miles to the east of Dull is the tiny village of Weem. A 'W' could fairly easily be mistranscribed as an 'H', an 'm' as an 'ne' and a flourish of the pen at the end could easily make an 's' so Weem to Heenes is not unlikely - especially when you think of some of the other transcriptions we come across
So perhaps 'Shathley Heenes' should be 'Strathtay, Weem'? I'll be interested to see what the original book shows!

Mary wins the coconut (first prize). I went into NRH this afternoon and looked at the microfilm. The writing was clear enough that the book wasn't required.
Perthshire Strathtay Weenes is what was written. I am happy to accept that the enumerator in Calderbank, Old Monkland was not familiar with Weem and it was recorded as Weenes. The Strathtay was for definite. The centre part of the W in "Weenes" was very faint, and I can see there the indexed name Heenes came from. NRH has that on their 1881 index - must be from the same source information as used by the LDS.
Thanks and all the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew
Glad you got it sorted out. Like you, I'm something of a map addict and always enjoy browsing one. Used to be something of a joke that my favourite bedtime reading was the road atlas and the national rail timetable
