Thanks and yes, receiving out-relief is what I meant. It would be great if these records were still in existence. I had a couple of different people in that situation in Coatbridge and also Airdrie... would I enquire at the Mitchell Library or NRH or in the town libraries themselves to see if the records do exist?

The Mitchell might well know the situation, or at least be able to direct you to the local archives invokved, but you are probably best to try Motherwell Hetitage Centre at.
http://motherwellheritage.freeservers.com/library.htm direct.
Lanarkshire FHS at
http://www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk/ should also be able to provide advice.

Hi Davie,
Thank you for the websites. I'll check with both and see what I can find out.

Many thanks to Andrew Paterson and Davie for the recommendations, I have found a couple of sources of maps with ecclesiastical parish boundaries on, as a result of your responses.
Just one comment on the statistical accounts: the descriptions in them lack enough detail to define the boundaries on a map. I'm going on the assumption now that when they were mapped the surveyor probably spoke with the relevant Parish Ministers and feudal landowners?
The link to:
http://www.talkingscot.com/rds/rds-intro.htm
is excellent as an introduction to the subject.
Thanks again.

Some of the descriptions are sufficiently detailed, but some aren't.
The exact extent of land ownership (in towns down to a foot or less

) would be defined in the sasine records.
Good to hear !!
Thanks again.
