a quote from our local radio station springs to mind" it's not just for fun it's an education" and this family tree research most certainly is educating :) kind regards maggie

Hi Nancy,

In 1924 there are no listings for 115 or 126 George Street, if you feel your Granny was still in George Street in 1924, give me a surname and I will look it up for you.

Hi Nancy,
You'll be glad to know that 115 George St. did indeed become 126 - so you were still in granny's hoose!

Hi Kathy,
Those old Directories are wonderful - always full of information that nowadays only family historians can appreciate.
(others not interested can't understand why we get so engrossed in them!)
The reason that names might be missing is because you had to pay for your name in it....
And nos. can be missing too if no one at that address paid for their entry....
That's why i never find any close rellies in them - we were too poor; some things never change

Hi Ian,
Number 6 George Place was changed to 11 in 1923.
Hope your date for the address was after that year because prior to it there wasn't any 11.
[two buildings had no number at all, and there were two buildings as no. 8]
--
The nos in George Place pre 1923 went in this order,
1,2,3,--,--,6,5,4,7,8,8. They were changed to 1 - 21 (all odd nos).
--
Jack
ps, i think by now you'll have a good idea as to why it was decided to re-number many of the streets!

Hi Jack,

Thanks for that information Jack, I was under the impression that the trade entries paid and the house occupants were entered automatically.

That would mean things were looking up for my poor old Granny & Granda, with a paid entry in Mossvale Street Paisley.

I believe these directories have been reprinted in the past few year, I'm happy to say mine is an original, and so so interesting.

Hi Nancy

I'm sorry to say there are no O'rourke's or O'Brien's listed for George Street Paisley in the 1924 directory :( .

Hi Kathy, Thanks for looking up the names for no. 13 in your trades directory, but sadly they had long since moved by then. The thought was appreciated though :)

Hi Jack, I've got a wee problem here, because the address was 11 George Place in 1866. The problem may well be mine, and I've mistranscribed from the certificate to my Family history program. I'm away to find out, --'I may be gone some time'' as my filing system could be better

OK Jack, Found it quicker than I thought I might!! I think it's still 11. A chance that it may be 16 and the curl of the six has disappeared, but if the no's only went to 8, then I have a slight problem, it's a ghost hoose!!
