No doubt at one time people were binning them or giving them away because they were no longer fashionable!

I am sure it has already been pointed out in the links that Coates was to become Coates Viyella, i beleive the Viyella group are still on the go. Probably of know interest to your Turkish friend however across from Paisley Uni. Is Coates's church whish was paid for by the Coates family.

Thanks, Andrew.
I'm not sure if he knew that Coats were no longer in Paisley area but with all the information I have gleaned for him here he will have enough to keep him going during his short time there.
Thanks to all for the help.

The Coats memorial Church in Paisley was gifted by members of the Coats family ..... as was the library building in High Street and the Coats Observatory in Oakshaw.

There are statues of some of the Coats family in Paisley Town centre (at the top of Dunn square).

The Coats family estates were situated in what is now part of Ferguslie Park Housing estate and only the gatehouse survives (it is now a nursery).

Hi everyone,

The Coats family also donated the land for the building of the Technical School, now the University, and made significant contributions over the years. The original Technical School building is located at the back of the campus on George Street.

If memory serves, I think the statues at the top of Dunn Street are James and Peter [J & P] Coats. Your friend might now see their mills, but at least he'll know what they looked like!! :D

Best wishes

Brian

Hi Rae
My great grand aunt died from a rather nasty accident there in 1891.
No such thing as Occupational Health and Safety in those days

Hi Sylvia,
No, conditions in factories must have been awful back then. We don't know we're born!
