Hi there .. saw you were chatting about Aberdeen. I haven't heard of a Willow Street/Road, There's a Willowbank Road and a Willowdale Place which are both pretty central & are tenement buildings.

You brought back loads of memories about living in an old tenement building there :D I was brought up in Jasmine Terrace ( just off King Street ) we had 2 rooms for the whole family. The living-room was tiny & included a recess for the kitchen. The sink was in front of the window, and we did indeed have an outdoor toilet where you took your own toilet paper, and a 'wash hoose' complete with an old mangle. The women had a designated wash day to get a weeks washing done and the use of a 'rope' which was a washing line, and gawd help anyone that used it out of turn :D There was also an 'Anderson Shelter' in the garden, which was an Air Raid Shelter used during wartime.

I best stop rabbling before i get thrown out of here :D
Looking forward to getting to know you all

Hi Wendy,

Welcome to TalkingScot!

It turns out that the Willow St. picture was taken in Providence, Rhode Island where my grandparents lived for about seven years right after they immigrated! However, Jasmine Terrace rang a bell too. My great Aunt Isabella's son George Still and his wife Charlotte were living at 18 Jasmine Terrace when their first child George Jr. was born. I don't know how long they stayed there. This is one branch of the family that I haven't had time to follow yet.

Small world isn't it!

Give it time Wendy. You'll soon see we are all inclined to go on a bit on here. If doing so was likely to get anyone thrown out, it would be a very empty place

May I also welcome you to [talkingscot] [scotland-flag]

Morning Carol & Mary

Carol, I lived at No33 Jasmine Terrace .. and wow it is a small world :D. Number 18 would of been at the other side of the street (tenements too) but they were demolished a long time ago, before i moved there in the 60's.
Wow this site is great .. so much to look at. Think i'll be sitting here for days seeing what's all on here.
I'm new to all this family tree stuff and just started putting together my own a few weeks ago, but this place is going to be a great source of information .. i can tell.

Thank you for the warm welcome .. glad to hear i'm not the only one who likes a good old blether :D

Nothing like a good blether to get the grey cells working :wink Seeing as we are talking about streets I was wondering if anyone could tell me about Granton Place about 1894 in Aberdeen, my grandmothers family were living there around that time.

Nothing like a good blether to get the grey cells working in the morning. Was wondering as we are discussing housing in Aberdeen if someone could tell me about Granton Place around 1896. My grandmother's family was living at number 10 around that time

Thanks,
LuAnn

Hi Girls

LuAnn .. Granton Place is in the west end (posher end of town :D) of Aberdeen & not far from the city centre. They are big granite houses either 2 or 3 floors high. You needed a few quid to live in one of them. It's still a highly desirable area to live in. They were usually privately owned by one family .. but some people used to rent out a room.

Paula, 21 Jasmine Terrace is still there. That house was only 6 doors away from where i lived :D. Jasmine Terrace was split in two at our side of the street .. with Jasmine Place ( a dead-end street ) being in the middle. Number 21 was at the lower end of the street. We had 2 shops on this street .. a sweet shop at the top, and a grocery store next door to ours ( on the corner of Jasmine Terrace/ Jasmine Place called 'Andersons' )
At the top of our street was 'King Street' & the bottom was 'Park Street'
