Maybe a census for the area would turn up something for the place name around 1901? An ex colonial officer who retained his rank or title (Major, Colonel?) would be too much to hope for!

I've no connection at all with Abyssinia; just a curiosity.

If not a military connection, - although my money, had I any spare :cry: , would be on that type of connection, - cf Liverpool's (Spion) Kop end :!: , - then there's near certain to be some other form of connection to the eponymous country.

In other cases, the origin of the name can be shown to be Scottish, but not, I suspect, here ............

Anyway, it sure beats Sumatra, Montana that we just drove by the other day :shock:
