Hi Anne, Thanks.I'll be headed to Dunoon and Innellen as well in August.I have found there is a lot of family history for me there.Don't you just love the things you find when looking up your Family Tree? :D

Hey, I resemble that remark  ! (But, most transatlantic Canadians prefer to use the UK-style "day/month" or "day/month/year" formats for dates. Except for some of us computer-geeks who prefer "year/month/day" when including the year.)

Hi Heather

That's great. Enjoy your time there. I do hope the weather holds up for you. If you happen to be there on the 10th or 11th August shout Hi Anne loudly down Argyll Street!!

The simple solution is to write 02Aug2005, as far as the recording of genealogical data is concerned

I made a wee note to myself, and if I do find my way to Argyll Street I will be sure to shout "HI ANNE " very loud indeed.Maybe I should get a T-Shirt made up before I go incase people don't recognize my Stotious accent. :D How about ,"I Love TalkingScot"?

Jist ca' canny in terms of the use of "stotious" when you are over here, - some folk might take you more literally than you would care :!:

Hello All,
It seems the Royal wasn't the first hotel for John Clark.Has anyone heard of the Ardnadam Pier Hotel ?John was Pier Master in 1871 when he and his family stayed there. With his 4 youngest kiddies with his second wife being born in Dunoon.

I don't believe I missed this post.
Me too, but I have been less than attentive to the Forum the last few weeks, in glorious lack of contact with the world and electricity.

My father was brought up in Innellan. He often spoke of the fire and recounted rescuers misguidedly throwing various items out of high windows including clocks! The only remains I saw there a couple of years ago were the stone arch entrance just at the bottom of the brae above the pier, where the bar entrance was. I played a round or two of golf there with my father in the week´s break after "Highers", and again recently with my son and can confirm the description above. Pretty steep and rather damp under foot, though the locals assured us the course was unusually dry. Great views over the water.
I am a little puzzled by the post card from 1921, and suspect it is older, as my grandparent´s house "Seaforth" which they bought in 1920, for a mere GBP630, (I have the receipt) should be to the right and slightly above the Matheson Church, among the hay stacks. The Matheson Church was named after Dr. George Matheson the "Blind Preacher" whose first charge was Innellan see; http://lu.softxs.ch/mackay/Couples7/C201237.html

Anyway, keep any memories of Innellan coming; its a lovely corner of Scotland.

Hi Thrall,
I did indeed get to see the ruins of the Royal and had a pint in the Pub that had once been joined to it by an annex. To the right of the door entering the Pub there are the remains of a set of curved steps which the then owners Mum assured us led to the hotel at one time.(I use the past tense as the Pub was up for sale when I was there.)on the corner of the stairs there is a lot of over growth and if you look underneath you will see the sign for The Royal Hotel. Its a lovely large plate .While my cousin and his wife and I enjoyed our drinks inside we saw a picture of the Hotel hanging near the end of the bar.My cousin used his fancy camera and got me some lovely close ups.I really enjoyed my day in Dunoon but I think sitting in the Pub was the highlight. I remember wondering if my Grandfather had sat there when he had returned from WW1 where he had been a guest of the Kaiser (POW) .His Mum was still living in Dunoon at that time so its not too far fetched an idea.
Later we went along the road and turned up another hill which took us to the area above the Pub and saw what remained of the Hotel. Its now part of a seperate piece of property and has seen a great deal of neglect but must be a favorite watering spot with the local teens as we found a pile of empty tinnies and crisp packets.( A wee warning to any who may go looking for the Royal wear proper footwear.I was in sandles that day and besides climbing about the hills I had a few not so pleasant encounters with brambles :D .
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH
