Apologies for hijacking this thread but I just thought I'd share ...

... Talking of Madeleine Smith - I was inside her (former) house just last week! The building has been converted very successfully and very sympathetically into an open, bright, modern office. The entrance hallway, however, having retained some seemingly original wood panelling, is quite dull and dark in comparison with the meeting rooms. Just inside the doorway is a plaque with the story.

I have been fascinated by this case since my late Dad told me about it many years ago, and if anyone wants to know more, see if you can get a hold of the book "Square Mile of Murder" by Jack House.

The Mitchell Library are currently "celebrating" the centenary of the trial with a small display of items connected to Madeleine Smith, including her letters and a photo or two. And I read somewhere that Glasgow law students would be re-enacting the trial - behind closed doors, unfortunately!

Also, I don't know if this is true - perhaps someone can shed light on this myth. I had been told that a dress, apparently worn by Madeleine, was stolen from it's display in that well known establishment, The Drovers Inn at Ardlui. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,
Helen
