In Ayrshire Drongan is all one word yet Trabboch is all emphasising the first syllable with 'uch'tagged on at the end.

...snipped.....Russell
Drongan might be one word, but in Ayrshireese it's Drung'n, even, on a particularly bad day for glottal stops, Dr'ng'n

St John's Town of Dalry. The name is bigger than the place but lots of my wife's rellies seemed to be bred there so lookout for rabbit burrows

.snipped ..........
And that's without the two wee villages/hamlets of Dalry in Perthshire, or, very confusingly, the parish of Georgie in Embra, the full name of which is Gorgie and Dalry ...... a relative told me that an Edinburgh line had moved to the city from Ayrshire, but they hadn't realised that they'd never moved from the city parish of Georgie & Dalry............. ....... but I first scoured all the other 4 Dalrys :-

Oddly enough, Culross is pronounced COO RISS.

There used to be a Miner's Holiday Home just up the road. Blair Castle, I think. My parents went there. The sexes were segregated. Who knows what pensioners get up to!!! :P

Och mah puir heid!! #-o Whit am ah gaun tae dae!! :-s

Catriona....France is looking like a bon idee  8)

Interesting that Lesley compares the end of DALRY to the book title and no the Comin' Through The kind....hmmmm......I expected a Scots comparison ......or isn't that the same Rye???

Thankfully I've got 'em on the census in Ayrshire so I've got the right Dalry spot. Miner's rows right there in PEESWEEP. That there is one I don't try out too often

While were on comparisons.....I got a CATHCART surname in my lot from the north of Eire. Is the the same as the Lanarkshire town? I don't suppose I've been correct in thinking it's Cath Cart either huh? Tell me what gets left oot??

Russell....so your wife's name is Bunny eh? Cute............. Does her nose twitch?

David.....glottal stops    !! Ah'm jist working on the ochs thank you kindly!

Dave.....Whit's a pensioner miner's holiday hame? Is that for a wee get-a-way or for the final decline?? :? Blair Castle???....I dinnae know that Tony was so well connected

Och the things I'm learning............will be my best holiday ever 8)

Hi Wonka2

Elderslie is all emphasis on the ELdersli Short i on the end.

Jean

Funny you should say that! I noticed her nose twitch the other day but maybe that was a response to a juicy problem in the family tree. And, No her name isn't Burrows or Warren either.
Don't listen to Catriona. The French show you Bayeaux then tell you its prononced Bayou. Now even us Scots know where the bayou country is and its not in La Belle France!!

Picture of Blair Castle, Culross. Memory still holding up.

Miners only - Tony and other politicians definitely not welcome.

That would be Scottish "air" Andrew and not the English stuff that as far as I know has an almost silent "r" at the end.
