looking for street

Post by rosie » Wed Sep 19, 2007 7:18 pm

Hi

I've been looking at the 1901 census for my great grandparents and it states that they resided at 12 Rutherford Lane Cowcadddens.

Does anyone know of this Strreet? Is it still there? :?

Any info would be appreciated

thankyou Rosie :)

Hello Rosie,

Would that be the same as Rutherford Lane Barony?

It's listed on this page under Enumeration District 63 which also includes Renfield St and Hope St only. Just in case it no longer exists or the name has changed this should give you an idea of where it was.

Check those and other nearby districts streets against a current street directory (maybe www.multimap.com) for new street names which have appeared since 1881.

Hope this helps,

Hi Rosie

Alan got in first and I think he has located it although it no longer exists on modern maps.

That part of central Glasgow was riddled with lanes and alleyways many of which have been cleared for modern buildings.
I tried several maps from around 1840-50's but they did not show the smaller alleyways, only the main streets.
I have a feeling that it was near to Dobbie's Loan because I searched that area some time ago for some of my own ancestors and the name rang vague bells. It is probably under Buchanan Street Bus Station or one of the large office/commercial blocks which fill that area now.

Hi folks,
If you go to this page of the very useful NLS map site.
--
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/townplans.html
--
Select Glasgow [1892-4]
Select the centre square,
Select V.I.10.5 (3rd from right side & 4th down)
You'll see Rutherford Lane just below the Theatre Royal.
(near top right corner of map)
According to some Glasgow A-Z street maps that i have,
the lane seems to have disappeared in name around 2000.
But perhaps before that? The maps just not having being updated properly?

How in heck did you find that Jack ? Well done.

What intrigues me now is that William Quarrier ran a night hostel for homeless women and children in a similar lane - Renfrew Lane, just a block down from Rutherford Lane.
There were lots of single apartment hovels in these lanes. Not a salubrious environment at all in those days.

A check of my Glasgow Streetfinder shows Rutherford Lane still existed in 1993.

Please don't ask why I bought a Street Atlas of my home town in 1993 'cos a' huvny a clue. :?
