Innkeepers in Elgin

Post by NadineS » Thu Oct 11, 2007 4:16 pm

I have a McIntosh family that were Innkeepers in Elgin around the 1840's and 50's. Their address on the 1841 census is 7 School Wynd, in Elgin. On a recent map it looks like the street is now called Commerce St. which runs south of High Street. If someone is familiar with this area, could you kindly tell me what it's like today? It must have been a fair business, they had servants, a hostler (stableboy?), and.......A TRAVELLER FOR GROCERIES!
Wow, could I use one of those!

Thanks for any help,

Nadine

Oh, I forgot to ask...
Is there a link where I could find any information on Inns during this time period, or what the name of it might have been?

Thanks,

Nadine

Hi Nadine

You could try www.moray.gov.uk and click the local heritage link on the box that say quick links (or similar !) then click libindex or just wander round the site - its one of the best for Moray roots !

Enjoy

Thanks Tracey. What a great site for Moray. Too bad there was nothing on the Inn, but I did get some more tidbits of info!

There is an 1868 Ordnance Survey town plan of Elgin in the map collection on the National Library of Scotland website. Hotels and lots of other details are shown on it.
