Limekilnburn and Nethershields

Post by Rodeo » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:16 am

On a 1769 OPR birth extract for an ancestor, the parents of the child were cited as living in Nethershields, Parish of Glassford. The births of their subsequent children were registered in Hamilton, the OPR extracts citing the parents as 'spouses in Limekilnburn' (Quarter).

I know Nethershields is near Chapelton but, curiously, I can't locate it on any map. In my internet searches, I can only find references to Nethershields Farm. From an entry I found in an old Glassford Cess Book, Nethershields would appear to be a property. Was Nethershields, in fact, a settlement or a private property? Also, where is Limekilnburn in relation to Nethershields?

Is anyone familiar with this area and its history, particularly 17th and 18th century farms in Nethershields and Limekilnburn?

I'm stumped and would be most grateful for any help.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hello Rodeo,

Sorry I don't know the area but a look at it on a modern day map shows all the places you mention in your post (the circle is Nethershields Farm).

Here is the area around 1816 showing Nethershiels, Chapleton and Lime Killburn (Chalpleton and Nethershiel are in the Glassford Parish which is the light green area on the west of the map and Lime Killburn is in Hamilton Parish coloured yellow).

Hi Annette

Thanks so much for your reply. I had a good look at that 1816 map, which seems to clearly show Nethershiels as a farm. Did you notice that northeast of Nethershiels is Nr. Shiels, which appears to contain a number of houses? Perhaps there was a Nethershiels farm and a nearby Nethershiels (Nr. Shiels) community.

I just received an email from someone who photographed the track leading to Nethershields (citing its ordnance survey map coordinates). He wrote: 'The only information on the history of the area that I have is that Nethershields is marked on the OS map from about the 1890s. The Nethershields on the old map corresponds with the more easterly of the Nethershields on the current OS map. From the old map it doesn't look as if there have been any changes to buildings in the area in the last 100 years.'

Again, many thanks for your help, Annette.

Cheers,
