Good evening,
I have the above two place names from some handwritten records. It's reasonably clear writing, so I'm fairly sure of the spellings. However - I cannot find either of them. From the context, I would assume the NorthEast of Scotland, but not sure.
Does anyone have any idea where they are?
Many thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin
Best wishes
Lesley
Would it be possible to give us some idea of the context - are they OPR records, perhaps? Also, some idea of the approximate date may help narrow things down a a bit. Often small steadings or even villages which once were "on the map" are now no longer there and their names are forgotten even in the local area.I have the above two place names from some handwritten records.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Colin,
Reiss is just north of Wick, as you head for John o' Groats. You won't get much further north-east on the UK mainland. I was there a couple of weekends ago - great long beach facing out to the North Sea.
OS map showing Reiss
No sign of Rattie yet.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hello All,
Could be rather ancient - there’s mention of a Rattie and nearby? places on page255 of this book. “History of Scots Affairs, from 1637 to 1641”
Are they Forglene and Inchdrour? - somewhere near Banff? - beats me.

Thanks for all the help, I've been looking through some of Scotland's old maps and have found a 'Rattray' which may be the old name. It's just SE of Fraserburgh on the coast.
The Reiss, I hadn't realised, was quite so far north! I'd been looking in the Aberdeenshire/Banff sort of area, as that's area most of the families came from.
FYI, the written records, are notes written by my Great Grandmother, for her daughter, just prior to her death. (Still better writing than mine now!)
Again, I don't know what I would have achieved without all your help.
Regards & thanks,
Colin
