Missing Son's ?

Post by trish58 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 10:09 am

Hi every one

Can you please help to sort out this family as I am going around in circles now :!:

John Agnew born 1841 Stranrear, married Margaret Rodgers 31 Dec 1868 at Blythwood, have MC. (John's Shoemaker all his life)

John Agnew 1871 living with In-Laws at 34 Crown St Govan, Margaret not on census. Also no children.

1876 (9 Feb) Margaret died at the "Royal Infirmary" Dennistoun. DC

1879 John re-marry's. 2 Dec 1879 at Gorbels have MC married to Rachael Barr (widow)

John Agnew 1881 living at 13 Main Street Loudoun with wife and 3 Sons
James 1866 b Glasgow. Henry 1873 b Glasgow, John b 1875 Glasgow.

1891 Census John & Rachael are living alone 83 Green St Glasgow.

1901 Census John & Rachael appear to have gone to Lancashire England, Bootle Cum Lanacre . Still alone

James born 1866 was born before John's first marriage, and I cannott find ANY BMD records for any of these three boys, and they don't appear on any other census, not even James born 1866 :?: :?: (1871)

I have checked SP records, IGI, also wondered if they may belong to Rachael and first husband, still no luck finding them, also checked records leaving for the country, everything draws blanks.

Where are these 3 boys :?:
Help Please

Many thanks
Tricia

Hello tricia,

Not going to be much help but one thought is that the 3 boys may not be brothers.

Henry is an annuitant but the other boys aren't. There is an illegitimate birth of a John Agnew (mother Mary) in 1874. Could this be John senior's sister's child?

The only other thing that's bugging me is John senior living at Ayr in 1881 says he was born in Ayr and not Stranraer.

Somebody else will be along soon with something more positive I'm sure.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Tricia,

I have one family to offer as a theory - a near fit...

JOHN MCALLISTER married RACHEL BARR in Clough, Co. Antrim 04-Dec-1851
In Scotland they produced the following children:

HELEN MCALISTER - Birth: 10 JUL 1864 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JAMES MCALLISTER - Birth: 25 MAR 1866 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (1) - Birth: 11 JUL 1868 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (2) - Birth: 04 SEP 1871 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JOHN PATERSON MCALLISTER - Birth: 16 DEC 1873 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland (registered 1874)
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (3) - Birth: 25 APR 1876 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland (father deceased)

JOHN MCALLISTER senior died 25 NOV 1875 Glasgow
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (1) died 1870 Glasgow
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (2) died 1874 Glasgow
ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (3) died 1879 Glasgow

No sign of a HENRY MCALLISTER though, so does my theory stand or does it fall? (Also bearing in mind Annette's annuitant clue above - not a brother?)

All the best,

AndrewP

** a few minutes later **
** BINGO **

ALEXANDER BARR MCALLISTER (3) died 1879 Glasgow
His death was at the same address as given by JOHN AGNEW and RACHAEL BARR on their marriage certificate, also 1879. :D

1871 (from Ancestry)
4 Shamrock Street, Glasgow (Govan)
John McAllister 48, Ireland
Rachel McAllister 40, Ireland
William McAllister 15, Ireland
Margaret McAllister 8, Ireland
Ellen McAllister 6, Glasgow
James McAllister 5, Glasgow

1881 (from Ancestry)
Main Street, Newmilns (Loudoun)
John Agnew 39, Ayr
Rachael Agnew 42, Ireland
James Agnew 15, Glasgow
Henry Agnew 8, Glasgow (Annuitant)
John Agnew 6, Glasgow

So the outstanding question is, who was Henry?

Hi Annette

Thanks for the search, I did view the BC for John in 1874 Mother Mary but that was a blank also as there are no Mary's in the Agnew line that I am searching-lots of Jeans, Ann, Elizabeth but no Mary.

Thanks again
Tricia :)

Hi Andrew

Thanks for all that searching it's great, but yes "who is Henry" and where did he go.

Could it be that John & James went back to their name McAllister, and dropped the Agnew? I have found with this family research anything is possible and people turn up in the most unexpected places.

I will go through what you have found, and who knows Henry may be a Barr :?:

Many thanks

Tricia :)
