A building in Victoria Street Edinburgh

Post by anne » Mon Apr 07, 2008 10:02 pm

I'm working on a family history for a friend from the US and want to include photos of his ancestors' residences. I'm trying to locate the address given on a 1936 marriage certificate - 94 Victoria Street, Edinburgh. My feeling is that the tenement in question is in fact 94 West Bow. Any ideas would be welcome.

Hi Anne,

Unless the streets there have been re-numbered, or renamed, it looks like your assumption of 94 West Bow looks most likely.

Using the map on the City of Edinburgh Council Planning Portal website, and the Royal Mail online postcode directory, it looks like Victoria Street is made up of:
Odds: 1-15
Evens: 8-46
India Buildings: 1-6

and West Bow:
Odds: 87-107
Evens: 80-118

94 West Bow is detailed as 94/1 to 94/4, so is presumably made up of 4 tenement flats.

In the picture from the following link, I think 94 is the tenement above the shop with the white-painted frontage on the right-hand side heading up the hill, seen beyond the well-head.

All the best,

Many thanks for taking a look Andrew. It must surely be that building - I can't see any way numbers in Victoria Street ever went up as far as 94. Apart from taking photos I was keen to be sure as I've found people with the same uncommon surname living at 94 West Bow in 1871, but as I can't find them there after that, nor any entries for a 94 Victoria Street in any censuses I think I'll just have to put it down to coincidence!
