Ta,

I live and work not too far from Nitshill but never thought about why it was called that.
Looking at this old county mapshows it was once called Nutthill (or Nulthill).
Regards,
Annette

ta Annette,
There were 3 of us ( one from Paisley) looking all friday night and well into saturday morning( you know there is a small chance we all have a bad genealogy addiction) and none could find a sign of how it got its name.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

My Great-Granny was born there & I never once thought of the origin of the name.
Lots of head scratching though.

Hi Heather,
Can't answer your question but why not try contacting the person on this site... http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=261 ...these are old posts from 2007, but maybe by this time, he's done a little more research on the area and possibly could give you an idea of where the name of Nitshill originated. Well...it's worth a try anyway
Regards,
Anne H
Later...Looks like you're out of luck as to the origins of the name. I read a couple of more pages and on page 3 found the following...
"The origins of Nitshill are lost in antiquity and it is even uncertain how it got its name. Tradition says it came from a small hazel-nut grove that capped a little hill which was levelled by the bulldozers of the late nineteen-twenties." Actually interesting reading!
