Hi Maureen
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot. :D
A good place to look for old photos of Glasgow streets is the Virtual Mitchell:

Hello Maureen,

Check out ‘19th Century British Library Newspapers’ in this freebee but don’t delay because it may disappear at any moment. (That’s what I said months ago but better play safe).

If you search the Glasgow Herald in the appropriate period for the street name (and any old name) you may find articles about this and that and other goings on in the street. While you’re there check out all your ancestors as well. If you strike any problems let us know.

Alan

Hi all, didn't come back on here last night as i was facinated with the sites mentioned, expecially the Maryhill barracks pictures, as my great grandfather was in the royal artillery during the 1850s-1860s, would he have served there but lived offsite?

Does anyone know where Shatesbury Cottages in Whiteinch would have been or if they are still in existence?

My great grandmother died there in 1904 and i cannot trace the address and it has also stumped about 3 Generations of the family all living in the same area!!!

Shaftesbury Cottages, Scotstoun

Post by Jack » Sun Jun 08, 2008 9:55 pm

Hi David,
Shaftesbury Cottages still exist today, and form part of Dumbarton Rd. Scotstoun.

If you would go to... http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/townplans.html

Select Glasgow [1892-4]
Select middle box at left
Select V.8.15 (near top left corner)
Shaftesbury Cottages are on the north side of Dumbarton Rd, and run west from...
...Park St (near top left corner), to Elm St, then Lime St, and continue to Westland Drive.
The continuation can be seen on the bottom right corner of V.8.9.

The corner cottages (others too?) have nicely carved stone rectangles which say...
..."Shaftesbury Cotages, Gordon Park"...

Cheers - Jack

Glasgow Streets

The definitive booklets on Glasgow streets, including the many name changes over the years have been written by Susan Miller, and can be obtained at the Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS website, http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/publications.aspx , as well as the bookshops of other Scottish FHSs.

In Glasgow and other cities, the situation is very complex, given the many changes over the years. Susan Miller's publications go into great detail.

Not least in the cities, but also in most towns, over the years, the street numbering was changed on a quite regular basis!

In other words, beware!, as, just because your ancestor is shown in a certain record as living at number whatever in something street, that address could very often have become later a different number in the same street, or even become a quite different street, albeit the very same building!
