Hello pkman3,

I searched in google books for "matthew simpson""alison drummond" and found some snippets etc on page 188 of “Notes and Queries” published 1911 and then couldn’t resist the temptation to tease it out into something useful as follows:

ANDERSON: SIMPSON: DICKSON: BAILLIE: GORDON.—I seek genealogical details of the ancestry of—
1. John Anderson, who married 23 July, 1824, Hellen Simpson (born 24 Sept., 1795; died at Bantaskine 1863) at Edinburgh. The Andersons lived from time immemorial in Haddingtonshire. Anderson’s father was a shepherd. The latter married, as his second wife, the daughter of the illegitimate son of George Seton, fifth and last Earl of Winton.
2. James Simpson, father of the above Hellen by his second wife Isabella Dickson. James Simpson claimed descent from the Simpson who was Dean or Provost of the Collegiate Church of Dunbar about 1560, and who joined the Reformers and married a nun from North Berwick Abbey. James Simpson died in 1819.*
3. Samuel Dickson (brother or cousin of the above Isabella Dickson), born 1749, died 1793, builder and contractor, who built most of the new town of Edinburgh. Samuel Dickson married Agnes Baillie at or near Edinburgh.
4. Thomas Baillie, father of the above Agnes by his wife —— Gordon. Thomas Baillie was, I believe, connected with the family of Baillie of Lamington.
Please reply direct.
JAMES S. ANDERSON— Cuddington, Bucks.

Editor’s Footnote
*I understand James Simpson was a son, or grandson of Rev. Matthew Simpson, minister of Pencaitland, by his wife Alison, dau. of Adam Drummond of Megginch. Alison Drummond was married to Matthew Simpson in March, 1709, and died 1736. Matthew Simpson died 1756, aged 83 years.

Mr James Seton Anderson appears to have been very active in genealogical endeavours and his name and enquiries crops up in other editions of this publication. It looks as if your “Laird of M’nish” was “Adam Drummond of Megginch” so it was possibly meant to be “Laird of M’inch”.

Hope that helps,
Alan

thanks Alan,

thats been a great help. It has opened up a whole load of other questions surrounding who Adam Drummond ( the laird of Megginch) actually was and his family.

I will need to start more research on this subject.

Thanks again.

Philip.

That’s okay Philip,

Some “Notes and Queries” publications are available for download from the Internet Archive. Try a Google Search for exactly this "james seton anderson" site:http://www.archive.org (or whatever other term you want to put between the quotes). Maybe there’s something useful there.
