Good Afternoon All

This is going to sound like a rather silly question, can anyone tell me what the suffix "MILTON" in scottish place names mean.

Hi Bruce
I think it is a shortened form of "Milltown" though that is just off the top of my head, so may be wrong.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Bruce,

I always assumed MILTON was a shortened form of Mill Town.

All the best,

Fife has a clasic example;

Coalton of Balgonie and Milton of Balgonie

Balgonie Castle is between the 2 settlements, one has Mill Lades on the river Leven and the other has mine shafts.
