TEMPLETONS FACTORY

Post by rubeaz » Fri Apr 24, 2009 6:27 am

Templetons Factory, West Street, Glasgow. :D

My ancestor died at this factory in 1910. According to my records he was a Carpet Cropper.

:? Would anyone know what sort of factory Templetons was ?

Thankyou (Australia)

It was a Carpet Factory.
The building was referred to as the Taj Mahal of Glasgow if I am not mistaken!

The building was said to be inspired by the Doge's Palace. A google will give you loads of info and pictures of the factory which, I think, has now been converted into apartments.

I agree with Doge's Palace. My great-aunt, who was born just along the road from it, always called in the Dodges Palace!

Glasgow has some of the finest surviving architecture in the World.
To build a factory such as Templetons as a work of art sums up much about the duality of Glasgow.

My Dad was a weaver in Templetons carpet factory. He was night shift from before I was born till only shortly before his death in 1973, (a total of about 25 years).

I still fondly remember the Christmas parties they had for us kids. They were a great family firm with real interest in their employees.

The Templetons "Doges Palace" is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

:) My sincere thanks for your replies to my posting.

The building is magnificent.

I hope one day to visit.

Thanks for the links :)

Living in Australia tracing my scottish ancestors is quite challenging and thanks to TS and Momat, Merlot, Muriel, Joette and Emanday I am finding it very enjoyable.

Kind regards and best wishes Kay

My dad also worked in the Templetons factory on the night shift. I remember my mum making his "pieces" up, some of which consisted of a Flake or Frys cream bar mashed up between two slices of good old Scottish plain bread. Sometimes covered in sugar!

I lived just up the road from there in Bridgeton (Brigtin). Family still do :)

I remember that recently some of the building has been used as a kids play area.

Completely agree with the comments about some of Glasgows architecture. It's not until you travel a bit that you begin to appreciate it.

Most people miss out on Glasgow's architecture in the city centre as they don't look higher than ground level. They only see the shops.

Several years ago the post office released a set of stamps. One of them was Templetons factory..

I bought two of them and put them in a wee brass frame. English visitors who've not been in my house before get very confused when, in answer to the question "where is that" I simply reply - "Oh, it's just a carpet factory in Glasgow".

I do explain to them later, but I love watching them mulling over it for a wee while first.
