Locating Buildings

Post by HeatherH » Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:50 am

I have a copy of the 1881 census for my Great great grandfather and his family in Dunoon and Kilmun. On it he is listed as the owner of "The Royal Hotel" in Dunoon. Is there any way I can narrow this down a wee bit more to maybe find the building or even the location of where the building was.John Clark died in 1886 and is again listed as hotel owner "The Royal Hotel" Inellen.

Hi Heather

Google does it again !!!

See http://www.visual-evidence.ac.uk/aberde ... =1&start=0

But be careful, as there was/is still a Royal Marine Hotel in Dunoon, - Innellan is 5 miles to the south of Dunoon.

Hello Heather,

I'm sure AndrewP will come up with something but I found this old picture of Innellen. I'm sure the hotel will be one of those buildings on the shore and I think there is a good chance it would still exist today.

(Annette - no whoops required :!:  )

Look at all those massive mansions !!

This was one of the places that the families of rich Glasgow merchants went in the summer, with the husbands going off back to Glasgow from Monday to Friday, .. there was a pier at Innellan with regular steamer/paddle-steamer connections right into the centre of Glasgow (the Broomielaw) to the right of the photo from memory. I'm not sure if the Royal Hotel is on the waterfront or is that building top right marked with an "x" (later edit, it's neither, -see later posts, - dww)

Then there's all sorts of stories about what the hubbies got up to during the week

Another google produced :

http://www.far-eastern-heroes.org.uk/Ba ... inning.htm

About 3/4 down the page is a section on Innellan, and the Royall Hotel gets a mention.

Hi Heather,

A postcard showing the Royal Hotel, Innellan can be found at http://www.absolutelymad.co.uk/postcards/22tc14 (the postcard is for sale on eBay).

I am assuming it is the large white building that stands out in the picture.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
(still tring to find the hotel on a map)

Hello again,

I see from the story of the Baldwin family (see Wonka2's post) that it was burned down in the 1950's.

Here is the Royal Hotel, Innellan on a map - click here for the 1900 1:10560 map - it is near the top right corner of the map.

The postcard in my message above claims to be from the 1950s - one of the last pictures of this building perhaps?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hmmm...... in which case, it looks like the site that Annette M found doesn't show the hotel building !!, i t would be just to the right of the extent of the photie ... , but it looks like the 1870s building was substantially enlarged over the new 80 years.

The George Washington Wilson (GWW) photie clearly shows the hotel, and it looks like it was taken from the pier !!

GWW, BTW was probably the most famous photographer of scenes all over Scotland of his time, and, fortunately, 10,000s of the original glass negatives were saved from imminent destruction in the 1970s .......... see http://www.visual-evidence.ac.uk/aberdeen/controller ....... http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/people/ ... t1159.html ...... http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/wilsong.htm

Just had a look at the census entry ...........

Dwelling: Royal Hotel
Census Place: Dunoon & Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland

Note that the entry doesn't state that the hotel is in Dunoon itself, only that it's in "Dunoon & Kilmun" parish, which extends down to Innellan and beyond. It would be necessary to have a look at the description of the enumeration district at the start of the ED book to be certain.

Note that son Andrew was born in Innellan in 1874/75, - and Innellan was not a registration district in its own right as far as I can see.........

This enumerator didn't appear to have a particularly good knowledge of geography, - see "S Uist Mull" :!: :!:

Any suggestions for "Nornapdale," :?:  , apart from North Knapdale ? ...........

Any suggestions for "Landbank", - there is a Langbank not that far away but on the other side of the Firth of Clyde, in Renfrewshire ............ but there's a niggle at the back of my mind that there is a place with a name similar to that in the Dunoon area ...................

Not many guests in evidence, but then the census date would be a wee bit early in the year !!
