Family history project to help people trace their ancestors
Research advice and free internet access on offer
Published: 28/07/2009

A NEW resource to help people living at Alyth trace their family history will be launched this weekend.

The family history project, will provide those interested in tracing their ancestors advice on how to research them. Photographs of the town, as well as of former residents, will also be available on a computer database.

Alyth Library will offer free internet access, as well as ancestry research advice, while the museum will be showing regularly changing exhibitions of life at Alyth over the centuries.

A computer at the church will contain photographs dating back to the 1890s. Those involved with the project will also map, record and photograph headstones from local cemeteries to help genealogists research their family trees.

Irene Robertson, who coordinated the project, said: “Whatever your age there is something of interest in this project, whether at the library, the museum, or on the church computer.

“For instance, the church computer is searchable and we anticipate many people will find long-forgotten, or never seen, photos of relatives and friends, and indeed information or photos can be added at any time.”

The project, which has taken a year to plan, has been funded by the Scottish Community Foundation from the Scottish and Southern Energy Drumderg Windfarm Community Benefit Fund.

It will be officially launched on Saturday at 2pm at Alyth Parish Church.
